Nvidia GTX query/Laptop questions

Right so as the title states, this is related to Nvidia Cards.

Currently as it stands I have a GTX 650 CU TOP (The Asus OC edition) which has served me well and..has actually be surprising in a few games so far. However the end of the year is vast approaching and with black Friday just a few days away. I felt like I'd bump it up to something a little more gutsy. For whenever I decide to shell out large amounts of money for Just Cause 3, Tomb Raider. Etc etc.

One card caught my eye and it was the GTX 750 Ti, more specifically, This one

Though I'm not entirely sure if it would be worth it. I'm not really wanting to spend more than £100 on one considering what I have now still has a bit of life left in it. I run my monitors at 1920x1080 and as long the FPS isn't lower than 40 I don't really notice a difference between that and 60FPS. If the FPS is within that margin I really don't mind. I am also limited by my CPU since I think the card I'm proposing is pretty much on the ragged edge of what that the CPU can cope with when it comes to games. But the board is capable of a higher CPU if push comes to shove (Goes up to an i7 4XXXk - Can't remember exactly)

Current PC Spec:
Intel i3 3240 @ 3.4GHz (HT/4 threads)
8GB DDR3 dual channel- 1333Mhz (I think)
GTX 650 (Asus OC edition)
1000W PSU (Yes, seems a bit extreme but I got it as a gift from a friend so why not use it?. Plus its silent when in operation )

Well if the board it's capable of a higher CPU I would recommend one i5 CPU. i7 is way too expensive but if you have the money and really want to buy an i7 go ahead.
As for that graphic card I would check other graphic cards to see if there are better models with better prices. Good luck!

I had a 750 myself, but I quickly found it to be obsolite when I bought my 1080p monitor. So if you do get a X50 series card, it might not be enough to play with high settings.

I am currently running a GTX 960, but there is also a 960 TI varient with a 4gig frame buffer out there, the cost is around 200$. Anyway, the first and foremost rule is to put your funds into the GPU first, the CPU second and the rest afterwards. The games these days are more GPU demanding than CPU, unless you are running stuff like Arma. The 9 series GTX cards are a good pick these days and there is also a new 950 model, which currently has a bit of a price premium due to it being a recent card, but I am sure you can find something on ebay for your price.

The speed of your ram actually does not really affect the performance in games THAT much. There is almost no difference between a similar brand combo of a 1333 and 1600 ram when it comes to performance. In terms of clock speed, anyway.

As far as CPUs go, a Intel Core i5-3570K @ 3.40GHz might be a decent upgrade.
If you want to ''futureproof'' yourself a bit, get an i5 4670K

That's a very helpful set of information, cheers for that. I'll probably just leave my CPU then, since its handled everything up till now below the 60-70% load point. GTA V at High settings was just below 70%. I'll probably go for something a bit higher up in the graphics card area in that case, but like I say. The board is only a year or two old so it can handle a much bigger CPU than what was on there - I just haven't needed to do so up till this point.

Also check the amps on the 12 rails make sure there's enough wattage isn't everything

So i basically just ordered a 960 2GB. I feel i didn't need the 4GB version since it did bump the price substantially and really, i probably wont use all of that in my games. I play older stuff such as FC3/Discovery/COH more often than not and it doesn't actually use much memory. I'll look into my CPU if it turns out that thing is a bit out of puff in games, but it seems to cope quite well so far. It will need a new cooler however, since the cooler thats on it i stole from a Pentium G2030 (The stock CPU that came with that board a year or so ago) and its starting to sound quite ill so i'll be slapping a coolermaster on there at some point.

Anyway on to my next topic, decided to recycle this thread. My laptop is quite frankly the most unreliable thing in the world. It overheats frequently forcing a shutdown, it's had two replacement hard drives this year alone. Right now it's getting very-very sluggish and i require the thing for my college studies. I do service it regularly, i last had it apart back in September where i replaced all the thermal paste along with a cracked heat sink.This along with a thorough cleaning. (Somehow its made not much of a difference). Anyway i wondered if someone could recommend a hard drive and any other components that could improve this pile of scrap. I really don't want to spend a lot of money on replacing the entire machine since all it does is type word documents, play music and browse the web. It is a Toshiba C855-1TC. Spec: Intel Pentium B960 @ 2.2Ghz, 6GB RAM and a 150GB HDD (This HDD is the only one i had left after it blew out a brand new one i put in it..) Any input would be great. I honestly hate laptops, but it's an unfortunate necessity in my case. Cheers!
