I'd like to hear from people who fly or have flown the Greyhound VHF. Please, tell me about it, its particular strengths and weaknesses.

At a glance, it appears drastically inferior to the other VHFs. Armor on the low side, even slightly less than the Eagle, but the big thing is the lack of two Class 9 guns which almost all other VHFs have... That's a loss of those two Improved Debs which every non-Corsair (or Corsair-ally) uses. That's a big loss.

On the plus side, it has a slightly higher than average power core, equal to a Templar or Wraith or Raven's Talon, though still a fair bit inferior to the Titan (and vastly inferior to any bomber or SHF, obviously).

Even so, the ship looks like a bum deal from a pure stats standpoint. But people fly it, and seem to do so willingly rather than using it because it's what their faction should use. Is it wickedly agile, or does it have a really tiny hitbox, or some other redeeming factor which the cold hard stats doesn't make clear?

Just curious, thanks.

its a heavy fighter - not a VHF, i think. - and from what i know... its a well balanced ship - certainly not the best, but not the worst - a good compromise for a generic ship.

( sometimes the descriptions are simply wrong. - like the hammerhead is a HF rather than a VHF.... or the blood dragon is a VHF and not a HF )

i had a few pvp against it in a BHG bomber. - its a tough enemy, but just decently matched. - however the model itself is fairly large - as far as i remember ( all homeworld ships except a few - are much larger than you d think ... compared to vanilla ships.... for example the kadesh HF is like twice as large as the valkyrie VHF )

but the greyhound is something like "the state of the art HF" - much like the taidan heavy fighter that is also considered to be "one of the best balanced HF". - right now, it benefits from the fact that its protected from missiles - which is a great advantage over vanilla ships, too.

I love it. I dont really know why.
I prefer it over any other VHF that I've flown.
It's not the best ship around, but, it's nice.
It's also not the worst ship around.
Its a nice middle of the road one, that will teach
you how to fly against other ships (I.e you will die lots at first.)
There is no "small hitbox" or any other problem with it as far as I'm aware.

It's the preferred ship of the Liberty Rogues. Even though it can't quite decide what it wants to be. As such it's not bad for a VHF and it sucks as a HF. But when you consider the rst of the ships we have to fly, a ship with any turn at all is nice to have.

Kindly compare the Greyhound to the Wolfhound & Werewolf. Then you'll see why it's used.;)

The Greyhound is really fun to fly, but I find it lacks the firepower to joust VHFs (maybe cause I'm using Sammaels and no armor right now) and doesn't have enough manuverability to tail them like a LF.
Also, the Greyhound seems to have a knack for making more profit from pirating than my Falcata. I think its' cause traders respect that you're not pointing the strongest weapon in the game down their tailpipe.

Mm, well, thanks for the info everybody. I guess it's just the better than the other crappy ships available to the Mollys/Rogues, even with two less guns. If it has decent maneuverability (for a VHF), I suppose it might work well for a mini-razor or torpedo-jouster. Four Imp. Debs and a razor/torp.

Actually Sammaels have one of highest DPS of any weapons, and together with high fire rate and 750 speed makes them perhaps the best wep of the game. Of course they eat energy like no ones business....

But yeah, only 4 guns makes for a horrible disadvantage. Although IIRC greyhound has pretty good maneuverability; not as good as LF but better then (most) VHFs, and certainly better than other HFs (which are still set to the vanilla 60 deg/sec). Also as stated above, fly a Wolfhound or Werewolf, those lumbering punching bags, and see the difference.

On thing, does grey have a torp slot? That would make a huge difference.

edit: Ah I guess it does. Also Drake, Grey has only one less gun then Wolfs (they have only 5 guns)

Yes, lets compare:
------------------
Greyhound
  • Cargo: 70
  • Bat/Bot: 63
  • Base Hit Points: 9,800
  • Agility Rating: 1.1842
  • Powerplant Rating: 12,400
  • Energy Recharge: 1,270
  • Total Recharge per second: 10.24%
------------------
Werewolf
  • Cargo: 90
  • Bat/Bot: 86
  • Base Hit Points: 16,000
  • Agility Rating: 1.1163
  • Powerplant Rating: 15,000
  • Energy Recharge: 1,340
  • Total Recharge per second: 8.93%
------------------
Wolfhound
  • Cargo: 50
  • Bat/Bot: 26
  • Base Hit Points: 3,600
  • Agility Rating: 1.0488
  • Powerplant Rating: 3,400
  • Energy Recharge: 345
  • Total Recharge per second: 10.15%
------------------

Looks like the Greyhound is a really balanced ship in-between the Werewolf and the Wolfhound ships.

For the record:

It's a Heavy Fighter. Not a Very. It's power is it's biggest pro, having a high-end VHF one. Same as Avenger, Raven's Talon, Nephthys, etc. Plus, with four guns, it has harder time draining the core. That said, four Sammaels kill the energy real quick, I unfortunately know this from experience. Agility isn't that great. The closest easy comparison is with the Stinger. The Eagle's handing soars above the poor Greyhound. It really doesn't turn as well as you think. Size, still pretty big. Not the easiest thing to hit, but not the hardest either.

So if you're a Rogue and you don't want to fly (or can't fly) a Sabre, this is a much better choice than the Werewolf. Otherwise, it really ain't that great of a ship unless you can milk that slightly better agility to serve as an elusive Sunny platform.

<will still fly one until it gets replaced>
