I've noticed that the railguns in this game/mod work just like any other gun, you shoot it, stuff comes out the end, and it floats through the universe before it asplodes on the unfortunate other person's hulls.

But, what if its like a large line instead of a blob that floats through space? Like a giant pencil that 'draws' into peoples hulls like a giant glorified laser?

Is that even possible? It would have to go at infinite speed, <but not infinite range> So as to tell the program to fire incredibly fast <so you don't see the empty spaces in between the 'refire'>.

Soooooo,

Is this possible? the concept of railguns in this game doesn't quite add up to what everyone else's take on railguns. Might be something we want to change or put onto something else. <new weapons>

I believe the 16.67 refire is as fast as they can feasibly make things shoot. The chain guns are probably as close as you're going to get to a beam weapon.

Well, we could shrink the size of the images of the projectiles to really small, like a small line, and i have seen the chainguns fire faster. We could increase the refire rate to, oh, 10000000, or other similar number.
But that will proably increase server load..........

Depends, what do the modders think?

Railgun ? We don't actually have a railgun in this mod as far as I know, unless you wish to explain as to
which one you think it is.
As for massive multi projectiles, that would cause a whole heap of unnecessary load on the server, as
those who remember the swarm missiles, and 30.00 refires will attest to.

You can have small railguns I suppose ... But let's not get into scale discussion regarding Freelancer. Some wierd stuff goes on.

If I were to add railguns, I'd make them slow-firing, but with a long range (1000+), an extremely fast projectile speed (1000+) and high hull damage (lowish shield damage), but with limited (expensive) ammo, like missiles.

Yes that would be realistic in my opinion. Cause a railgun is basicly a "gun" that fires a projectile at a great speed.

Would be a really good Idea, just like the Guss Rifle(spelling?) From mechwarrior. It had a huge range massive damage output and extremely slow refire rate. Plus the ammo was very large. but in FL terms we could curve the weight to price.

In my opinion though. A rifle like that would be like a SNAC and would deal equal or greater damage. The reason i say that is due to the fact that the SNAC is Antimatter, witch in real life would "consume matter" The rifle would be matter, so when it hits your ship it would have "mass" and move your ship, like when starfleas ram caps.

Or, instead of a large weapon like that, you could have smaller versions that have ammo and shoot bullets. But I'd personally would rather have beam weapons that have energy ammo that recharges from the power core.

As Swift said, a railgun is not a rapid-fire or beam weapon.

It fires magnetically accelerated high velocity rounds. mmm, that sounds good. Magnetically accelerated high-velocity rounds.

Can I has a railgun?
