Turrets that actually do there job

Well i was thinking mind you this topic probably already come up somewere. But i was thinking about the idea of turrets that automatically lock and fire would be useful for most ships with turrets. you could have a setting which sets it to automatic and it fires on enemy or ya can manually control them ya self.

It would make fire fights a lot easier you can then concentrate on navigation in an asteroid field. Very hard to concentrate on blowing things up with turrets while you pilot. Guns are easy there forward firing an you can pilot at the sametime.

anyway just an idea AUTOMATIC turrets what does everyone think. pros and cons people.

Aww--you don't like a challenge.

I think it would liven up piracy a lot--and think of the "oops--I left them on again" moments when you were flying by NPCs.

I've always thought this would be a great idea for Freelancer (not just Disco.)

I mean, what is that turret on the back of my fighter supposed to be good for? I could just turn around and have that much more firepower, and I can't dodge while in rear or turret view. And in freighters, transports, capital ships... anything with guns on all sides, the guns facing away from your primary target could suddenly be useful for something (automatically firing at targets on the other side of your ship.)

If this were implemented, I imagine it would be client handled. It would be kind of asinine as well as difficult to make the server do it. Therefore, no additional lag. It would streamline fights, and make running gunbattles through the asteroids much more interesting.

HOWEVER- I do not believe it is possible, not without the source code. I don't know this for a fact, but I'm still 99% certain.

Which is a shame because it would make flying a collector wildly fun...

Edit: The AI already has their turrets on automatic of course. NPC fighters will have their rear turrets fire on you as they BARREL ROLL away. Perhaps if you could force this AI on your own turrets somehow... but I don't have a clue about how that'd be done, and again it would probably come down to needing the source code.

Well, would be great, both on bigger ship, even on smaller ( Because its actually hard to fly fighter, dodge, attack...and swich to turret mode and shoot on the one behind you with the turret on your ships butt:D) ships. Not sure how/if it can be done though.

Well not good for CAPs but good for transports I'd say. Cause with caps it would just give them a very unfair advantage.
But with transports it would give the traders a little more chance..

I agree cap ships there would be a rediculous advantage and the automation should either be very limited or none at all as they have the shields an armour to take there time an aim manually. The idea is excellent for transports who while in a panic navigating jumping to turrets aiming missing before going back to navigation it is an excellent idea gives them the little help they need to live that extra day. ( I could name 20 things that could kill a transports and freighters automated turrets or not. so it is kinda like adding some balance)
