There are any number of independent characters flying ships affiliated with IMG. That is great, and we're glad you're around, though we may bug you from time to time to recruit you to join. That said, we have seen several characters with callsigns approximating our faction's, and we would humbly ask that you differentiate in some clear way so as not to confuse the community.
IMG player faction ships use "IMG|Firstname.Surname[?]" with the "?" being the division designator. The ONLY player faction character without a division designator is the Guild Master, IMG|Peter.Barrington.
If possible, and simply as a courtesy, please stay away from using "IMG|" for indie chars. It's too easy for others to be confused and to attribute behavior to our player faction that isn't ours.
By the end of this week, we should have an updated roster posted with our new faction status page. Then, if there are any issues, the community will be able to see who is actually a member or not. Otherwise, if you're interested in IMG, please look up our faction (see my sig) - we'd love to have you!
Well i'd prefer it, as i'm sure everyone else would, if it were sorted without us having to resort to name changing people. Perhaps make a few suggestions on alternatives that the indie IMG can use, such as [IMG]?

I agree. I'm not interested in "enforcing our will" like that, even if it's legal, and I'm quite sure the admins have better things to do. We talk to people courteously in-game if we discover something, and sometimes it's just a matter of misunderstanding (often with folks who haven't joined the forums, so we suggest that to them, too). This is just a request to those who are around to be considerate of the potential problems involved. This is also just a reminder to the rest of the community that no one with an IMG designation out of line with the above is part of our player faction (though we'd be happy to have them).
As to suggestions, I can only request what not to use. There are many other possibilities that would work instead.
I think there might be a rule somwhere stating you cant have an official factions tag without a proper application.

Sanctions are a LAST RESORT. People around here seem to have forgotten that recently. What Trev is doing might stop a player from getting sanctioned for using a tag he didn't know he couldn't use.
Would you object to people using IMG-Shipname or IMG.Shipname or ny other such naming convention for an independant IMG tradeship? I can see how this may cause some confusion, but, seeing the NPCs flying around with similar names may cause people (such as me) to want to use such a convention for their own characters to add a level of RP to their name.
IMG is one of those annoying factions where the faction name is a TLA, as is the NPC ship designation, some similar examples being ALG and BMM. I guess there's no way for the faction to reasonably use anything but these letters, but it does kinda impinge on indies' RP...see what I'm saying?
I use IMGS- for Independent Miners Guild Ship, but I won't steal your faction tag.
:P
A way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay,
brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.
As Trev pointed out we use IMG|Firstname.Surname[?] for our ships, where the tag IMG| is faction tag and would be reserved only for members of the official IMG faction. Any other tag with IMG in it's name is good.

No problems with either of those, and thanks for mentioning them.
If people can't tell the difference between "IMG|" and "IMG-", "IMG.", "IMGS-", or similar, that's their own problem, not the indie's. I suppose if there's any doubt, the sensible thing would be to ask the player using it.
Edit: Oh, and we don't currently use ship names except for Albatrosses, so don't worry about that.
