Back before I took a break from FL, there was a bit of an overpopulation of barges in-game. I have an idea for an SRP request involving a barge, but before I go to all that trouble, I first want to make sure I am informed.
Firstly, since the wiki is so far out of date, are barges even given out anymore? Or have they been removed from the game entirely?
Secondly, I am aware that they are very slow and may have had their jumpdrive capabilities removed. What I would like to know is, what are the current capabilities of a barge?
Lastly, is there even a remote chance of a barge being granted to a character that does not belong to a player faction? Or am I just delusional?
I'm looking for information, not "barges are dead, don't waste your time".
If you mean that riddiculously large transports with the space over 10K than no, they are not in game anymore. The largest think you can gat has 5K cargo space.
Barges were replaced with the Civilian Carrier model (Which has since been updated to a new model as well). The barge files can still be found in prior versions of Disco, but the likelihood of bringing them back, even for an SRP, is low I'd venture. As it stands, they aren't in the game anyway sadly.
(i wanted to SRP one as a massive tavern/bar filled with various alcohol from around Sirius. Never got to realize that dream)

Unfortunately, it wasn't the jump capability I was looking for.
I had hoped to SRP a Zoner-operated barge in Pennsylvania to mine the Helium deposits there. Essentially supplying the raw resource for H-fuel production.
The trick was going to be that I'd planned to gather new(er) players in the system to mine the asteroids and help fill the barge up. Then I'd fly over to Bethlehem or Philadelphia or some station, sell the load, and give the newbies a couple million for their help.
I even figured at some point that it might have been fun to organize an event where a barge full of Sirius credit cards was escorted from one bank location to another. You know, classic cops vs. robbers for the big piles of money.
I'm rather disappointed now that I can't hope to fly a freaking huge ship that handles like a glacier.
