Asteroids are actually thousands of kilometers away from each other iRL. Once they get so close as in FL (or Star Wars), their mutual gravity attracts them towards each other and they form a larger object.

Gravitational pulls can cancel each other out. So if you form a ring around a bigger solar object that (the ring) is made of asteroids of the same mass and at the same distance from each other they pulls will cancel each other out completely. I think rotation around each other can also make asteroids avoid collision.

That's quite accurate, given the short paragraph, how gravitational pull works.
