Its my oppinion that a K is not a kilometer. There, solved the problem. Ships move really fast, and are scaled correctly. That is, the starflier is the size of a medium house, and ships only get bigger. In regards to the stars and planets, they're scalled funny as a result of a neural net mapping system, rather than a realview of the universe. Its impractical to change their sizes because of game engine restrictions. Stations are sized and scaled in relation to the planets.
Thats three different scales inhabiting the same space: One scale for ships, which have a human to compare them to, then stars and systems, which are simply wrong, then planets and stations, which make sense in relation to one another.
We already use the term K to refer to 1,000 of something from computer lingo (as opposed to the kilometer). And of course, it's improperly used, as K would be 1024, Y2K would actually be 2048, but anyway...
I could see where K refers to 1,024 miles. That would make things fit a bit better - and ship size on screen - is due to the magnification of our monitors, the computers are automatically blowing them up so we can actually see the detail.
Call it - the Star Trek bridge screen phenomenom...
