It isnt about size. Its about utility. and disco has no difference in utility outside of armor and firepower and its a mistake developers stopped making since the 90's
Every nation on earth has their own rules about similar sizes and utilities of ship class.
As times have advanced and the globe has shrank... there arent as many classes of vessel because a modern navy combines many different armaments into one platform.
Specializing each class of ship depends greatly on utility.. one of the biggest is stealthy operations and standoff/escort of heavy assets that cant defend themselves so well from beyond visual range type stuff like the ballistic missiles and advanced stealth strike craft of today.
So ships by themselves without escorts are happening more now. because they can shoot down incoming threats of most kinds from the air and usually try to sneak up on anything their trying to destroy. Outgunning is the last desperate contest you dont want to happen in reality.
IN Freelancer the caps were treated like battleships. Big guns on a boat that lunch smaller ships fighters for everything else.
So far the current battle-cruiser meta fits with what was developed in story but.. it isnt a perfect fit. there is a glaring problem with EVERY SHIP.
Cruise engines factor into fleet speed. But while in combat there is no difference between anything. What happened in history is the fast, maneuverable, camp won against the super thick armor gigantic guns camp. But in a campaign gigantic guns that can be moved "are" strategic. So we cannot favor one or the other.
WE HAVE TO HAVE BOTH.
The space navy meta needs a good look at.
In the original freelancer gunboat engines high a higher speed cap then the cruisers and battleships they even out paces fighters.
Capping everything to the same sub-light speed was just lazy. Disregarding the traditional rivalry of nimble well placed and strategic warfare vs unbalanced excessive power didn't help.
Speed and maneuverability needs to be reintroduced. Size is moot point because a good captain CAN usurp a battleship currently. if you haven't seen it then you haven't been here long enough.
So.. lets not think there a quick fix. there isnt. speed maneuverability and firepower needs to be set to a balancing rule and play-tested. there is no other fix.
But i can guarantee we will have way more fun. if we do it.
Other mods have already made a rubrick for these speeds for the vanilla ships. tweaking it for all our varied ships wouldent be that hard.

I don't quite understand what you mean. Gunboats speed with thruster is around 145. Cruisers with thruster is around 130 and BC is 115-120. Battleships don't have thrusters and their speed is 90. Currently the main problem of BC vs BS battle is a long and boring one and no BC can beat a cruiser. Really BC needs a rework so they are a bit more fun to play

I disagree w that, both ive beaten skilled cruiser players w LABC and got my thannie blued by BC too. But yes, hard battle, and if won, is by lil, to either side. By now, im expecting to see, and buying some more BC's, if they get better good, ill use em, if they get weird, rofl some more caps rusting... nothing new

@"K.Reddy" wasn't precise enough , It shuld be : "BC have tiny , tiny , tiny chance to beat Cruiser , mostly if they are big Cruisers like Praifect" .
