Server not showing up

So, in a very long time of me not playing this game, today I decided to download it and set it up.
Anyway, after some technical difficulties I managed to get the game running, made a new character and I wanted to go into space, then the game blacked out, gave me a message like "this is taking longer than expected, click ESC to cancel" something along those lines, I waited nothing happened, then I pressed ESC and the game closed for me (this was happening for my friend as well at the same time, he had a different error, he was already in space and he was getting the bad connection messages then the server just closed on him.
Anyway, it's been like 20-30 minutes from the time I'm writing this and the server is not showing up for both of us.
Any help appreciated
