Has the account been inactive for more than six months? In that case the characters will have been inactivity-wiped. I imagine that this is the case, as I currently own a ship with the name "Biggles" 8| Sadly the admins will no longer restore characters deleted for this reason, but it may be worthwhile checking out the Aid for Veterans programme for returning players linked at the top of the page.
