All the engines (except Nomad ones) have in their description that they will degrade at a said moment. How about adding that? Giving the engines a specific ammount of HP depending on the price, mark, and so on. IF the engine wears out completely in space, it will keep entering in *killed engine* mode. This way there would be a decent sense of immersion as nothing lasts ouy forever.
The engine would not be affected by weapons or explosives. It would degrade in time.
Mechanics like this sound fun in theory but end up being incredibly annoying.
Case and point: NPCs were greatly buffed a couple years ago for immersion. It however had the negative effect of making piracy impossible as you'd keep getting attacked by high-level NPCs that'd gib your ship.
Also, that would be god-awful to newbies who would suddenly lose their engines for seemingly no reason.
I mean, some engines are more expensive than others, and some ships don't even have engines, like Bustards (though those tend to be lost ship and all via deception, but whatevs) and caps. You know, things that already have large sums of money poured into them. What you are suggesting is
A. Impractical; it would be cheaper to Conn Xfer the stuff onto a new snub with its cheap engine
B. Not fun to implement.
C. Why can't we assume that they actually receive maintenance but it's not represented in-game?

Would be awesome. Especially the Black Market engines, since they are and I quote: "prone to malfunctions"

1) Speaking for newbies is not going to solve anything. If they adapted so far with all the new things, I am sure they can adapt with buying a new engine once a month or so
2) I didn't say ships without engines (capital ships/liners) would be affected by the change.
3) I repeat, maintenance is mandatory, but everything will end up broken sooner or later whatever we would do. Nothing lasts forever. Of course, not everyone would be pleased.
It would be interesting to see something like this. But, as @Lythrilux pointed out, it might end up causing other issues.
Nevertheless, a test with something like this would be interesting
Artificially slowing down the game is not good. One would think that in an age of nano repair bots, thrusters and engines are part of the equipment that are under constant maintenance and frequent repairs. I really don't think this is anything we need, but looking at the nature of this proposal, I'm glad this will never ever be a thing, since the mechanics of the game needed to be altered via FL-Hook.
