James Awdrey is the son of the Liberty Captain, James Hammons Awdrey, of the Cruiser "Nomina". Born on Los Angeles, he, his mother, and older brother moved as his father's station dictated. James rarely saw his father, as he was always on-call hunting down, first, The Order, and later the nomads. James was a bright boy, eager to live up to the expectation on him that he would follow in his father's footsteps. In childhood through his acceptance into West Point, his closest and only friend was, Karl Bieber the son of a Rheinlander Mercenary
During school, his performance was very erratic. One year, he would excel in a class, and the next, he would barely pass. His family might be somewhat to blame, such as the lack of a paternal figure, but James did exhibit one flaw, he was, and still is, lazy. If you give him something to do, be sure he enjoys it. Take homework for example.
James realizedl too late that he couldn't be lazy and be successful. He joined the West Point Military Academy, and, as expected, did well in classes he enjoyed. He was a promising pilot and tactician, choosing to pursue the career of a light-fighter pilot instead of that of a commander. Unfortunately, after 2 and a half years, he dropped out due to his grades in subjects such as history, management, and command.
After he dropped out, not even his family knows how he has gotten by. James' father, embarrassed and disappointed at his son for failing out of West Point, would not see his son, and they have not met since. About a year after West Point, his brother and mother also lost contact of him. He left them saying he was off to New York to find work.
His only contact since was with his brother in 816 A.S. James came to his brother's apartment on Los Angeles, beaten, unemployed, and in need of a ship. His kind-hearted brother loaned him an old Startracker. With only minimal acknowledgement of his need for medical attention, James Richard Awdrey took off.
