I have heard nothing about the sale or auction of Freelancer's coveted Souce Code. This is entirely hypothetical and I wondered what you, the Discovery community, thought. Please post any more additional thoughts.

Imagine the possiblilities we could do with the source code! instead of "Discovery: Freelancer Mod" it could turn into "Freelancer 2: Discovery" or simply "Discovery (with Freelancer game engine)". We could update the graphics, user interface, rework the servers... alot of stuff! I'd definatley put some money up so that Discovery could take a hold of it. It would always continue changing and evolving making it an open source, community charged program.

frankly while not absolutely everything in FL is moddable, just about any idea can be implemented in one way or another.

So even if we got source code right today we won't be able to do any changes that are massively different to those that people already can do. Only thing that would be really helpful would be multi-threading for the server.

Like he said there isnt much that we couldnt do today. That we could with the source code. These things can be activated through client side hooks, but this is all stuff for later releases.

Yeah, but the example you provided is linked to cargo jettisoning if memory serves, they were originally intended for docking. (Interestingly enough, the Valkyries wings are currently set in the landing position)

Show me a folding wing hack that makes them act as they were meant to.

Yes those are set to corgo jetison, but my point was it can be done through client side hooks as it says right there in that post.

Less than $1,000,000. I doubt anybody will pay much more than that for a game that is... What, six years old? And with computer technology rapidly advancing, its outdated even more so in that regard.

But umm... No, I wouldn't donate. If I had money to spare, possibly. As it stand, I do not - thus, no.

Personaly i'd love to have the source code... Fortunatly a lot of FL can be moded without the source code nearly 99% of it... server multithreading would be the greatest benefit of a source code.. bringing total player base to a thousand easily... There are also other aspect, a game can be changed even more and even better, even more roleplay could be introduced, but hey, one of the major advantages of having a roleplaying community is that the game engine is not the limit. Your imagination is. So imagine what you cannot code...

I think the sourcecode wouldn't reach some astronomical sums. It's not as if... Someone was selling out the code for WoW or EvE. 2 to 3k bucks would do perhaps. Considering the game's age and... popularity.

However... Some of yuz know how hard modding an existing game is. How hard would it be to make a new one? Even based on an existng code?

If a bunch of pros had difficulty getting it right - how would a bunch of eager fans do?

Still... methinx it is a way to go. Look at the games market these days - ridiculously high-tech games that hardly anyone can afford to play (I din't mean the game itself - but the hardware you "must" have) overpriced, overadvertised and overdetailed. While people still play Starcraft.

I believe it is the future - distant but still... Not very sophisticated, but extremely playable fan-made/rewritten games for anyone, for free.
