Technology Description:

The BIFROST is a massive experimental heat sink designed by the Unioners to make relatively inexpensive water cooling methods apply to solar-temperature environments, such jump drives during their charge cycles, effectively decreasing economic reliance upon expensive, disposable, and inefficient expendable coolant solutions, such as cryocubes and jump drive batteries. With the ability to intake vast quantities of cometary ice and synthesise deuterium-rich heavy water from the resulting gas, storing the water as high pressure water vapour within ship-length inboard cargo tanks, a vessel equipped with a Bifrost device is capable of jumping gigantic masses of men and material through hyperspace repeatedly without ever having to theoretically rely on battery sinks, operating the drive instead directly from the vessel’s tactical reactors, as any other embedded ship-board module would be used. This theoretically allows for enhanced strategic flexibility over vessels employing conventional jump drives – an obvious advantage for groups such as the Unioners or The Hyperspace People, who lack the legitimate economic bases of entire corporate bankrolls to substantiate expensive and logistically unwieldy hyperspatial drives, and must thus economise their hyperspatial drive systems wherever possible to maintain continued use.


The BIFROST system does come with a number of inherent advantages that have prevented general spread of the technology throughout the Union. Firstly, the volume of plumbing and additional coolant equipment required to use heavy water as a viable cooling medium without unacceptable levels of off-gassing adds significant mass to any battleship, which must result in a performance knock or the addition of secondary propulsion units to maintain operational parity with other large warships. Secondly, the system does not conveniently downscale to smaller spacecraft except for the most volumous of heavy battleships, although the technology is rumoured to show significant promise within the industrial sector. Pacifica’s Freeman Drive Commune and the Krefeld Service Commune have shown significant interest in obtaining BIFROST units and BIFOST variants for industrial applications, although widespread distribution of the technology is on indefinite hold until the Pacifica Crisis of 825 AS is abated and resolved.

The only vessel presently mounted with a Barometric Intelligent FRozen Oort-product Exothermic heat-Sink Technology unit is the UN|SLF-GEIST-Sirene, the flagship of Arno Schultzky and the Union defence flotilla of the Bering Relief Effort. Schultzky’s BIFROST unit is the prototypical module upon which all other following BIFROST’s are based – although the Sirene’s is slightly more instrumented due to its status as the original prototype. Mounted outboard from the vessel’s centreline, the heat exchanger itself does not interact with the primary systems of the vessel, instead, remaining isolate to the lowermost superstructure in an attempt to mimimise a loss of shipwide effectiveness should the unit suffer thermal runaway.

The BIFROST units and those like them constitute the most energy efficient non-artificial fluid based active thermal management devices in the entirety of Sirian history, and represent a uniquely Unioner application of older technological principles to the modern material requirements of jumpdrives and antimass/mass annihilation.

This Union proprietary technology can be requisitioned at the discretion of the Arbeitsdirektor for commanders of capital sized vessels, bustard carriers, or equivilent, although full logistical supply and outfitting logs must be provided.
