Slots can be annoying, restrict change and emergent balance, and about 50% of people won't bother signing on. Slots are for tightly controlled events. Something like this shouldn't be.

But do we really want that many players in one battle? The server did not seem to handle it that well and the game is apparently not designed for that many players in one place. Maybe splitting the event into smaller fights, say individual cruisers traveling on different paths at the same time?
Im not that sure what spiked the interest the most, but it was a combination of factors:
- First event after patch.
- New type of event.
- The outcome of the event affecting story line.
- The event is happening in capitol system, the existence of Bretonia is threatened at this point.
- The event was open without registration, did not required expensive ships, unlimited respawns.
On the other hand, there were no rewards for individual players, apart from blues and general fun.
Also as mentioned, 1/3 of the server did not participated in the event at all, would be interesting to know why.
As for future events and for the whole rest of the war, could we please get an event schedule in advance, so we know at least roughly what to prepare for? And some scoreboard, where we could see how the conflict is progressing, which side has won which part of the conflict and how much it helped them towards final victory? I feel that something like that is necessary if we players are to help decide the outcome. Might even help to balance the whole thing in the end.
Heck I would even help Gallia if I saw they are loosing the war too much, but at this point it seems like they are doing fine, despite them complaining at the lack of players.

I'd argue that we do. The atmosphere was peerless and it enabled strategies and ideas you'd never otherwise see in the community.
You can't have a battle of Endor with less than 20 ships per side.

Was doing a lot of this for a video I'm making at the moment but I decided to share all of the footage. Most of this is me trying to get decent shots. If anyone wants to use any of this just let me know and I can share it with you. This is all unedited raw video recorded at 2k (10 GB upload file...)
1st part is the start of the final wave with 4 cruisers.
2nd part (10 mins 52 seconds) is most of the 3rd wave.
Next time could we have the ships possibly actually flying like real players? Depending on the ship type this could make the ships either incredibly hard to hit with novas or easy to hit with them.
Cos I mean those archers if flown like real archers maybe even without the hull buff would have a much easier time not getting hit by novas. It'd just make the journey far longer and most likely reduce the amount of players sitting at maximum nova range spamming them from a safe distance. (most players ignored those spamming novas on the outskirts of the fight and those actually made up the majority of the damage the cruisers took.)
After much discussion within the story team, we have determined the outcome of this event to be a draw.
What that means is both victory outcomes will occur:
The Battleship Beuvray has been lost to allied assault and will become a wreck.
One Corsair battleship will move to the New London theater as reinforcement.
However because of this outcome, this weekend's event will be different from what we originally were planning to do. You will also see the impact of this event's results there.
Additionally:
Future events will not use NPCs. Any special ships appearing in events from now on will be player-flown.
Future events will be designed to prevent draws unless this is a desirable outcome.
We are currently discussing a limited registration system to allow freelancers to participate without impacting the balance of future events.
