I. Background In the primordial past of humanity’s journey, old sailors of Earth’s vast oceans huddled under starlight and told tales of mythical creatures. Krakens, sirens, mermaids, and more plagued the imaginations of seamen who respected and feared the unfathomable depths of the deep blue. To this day, rumors and tales of horrors and anomalies lurking in the depths of space continued to both inspire and intimidate the starfarers passing through the great void.
One such story told of spirits resembling humans known by a multitude of names. Some called them space nymphs, whilst others labeled them sirens of the abyss. But to most, these enigmatic entities are known only as Void Faes. Said to visit men and women in their darkest moments in the far reaches of society and known space, the Faes whisper into the ears of the disillusioned and broken to follow them deeper and deeper into the great recesses of the vast vacuum. Seldom few who encounter the Faes are ever heard from again, though some versions of the story end with people surviving with mixed outcomes. Some are nearly killed, others rewarded with riches and power beyond their dreams, and a tiny amount are chosen to live among the Faes.
There is a select kernel or two of truth to this piece of Edge World folklore. The Void Faes do exist, but not in the form some would expect. Tales of the Void Faes surged in frequency following the fateful Pygar expedition of 763 AS, leading some within the Omicrons' academic community to believe that earlier stories were an indicator of previously-unknown Nomad infections. There is very little to back these claims up, though some researchers insist in their assertions.
Recently, however, a miniscule group of infectees has risen under the brilliant dominion of the Nomad Vagrants. The rare sightings of these individuals, who are very different from their K'Hara-controlled kin, suggest the ethereal, mythical stories of yore.
II. Basic Description The sect of infected humans known as the Void Faes is a recent creation. In the waning months of 825 AS, the Nomad Vagrants, a subspecies of Nomad dwelling in Omicron Lost, carefully selected willing human subjects as hosts for incubi. The first of their kind was a gifted psionic, and set the trend for the Faes turning humans which possessed psychic potential over their psychically “dull” or “deaf” counterparts. Additionally, potential carriers are chosen due to the host’s influence, power, physical ability, location, and many other factors. Nearly all criteria is for the ultimate purpose of creating a perfect agent that can blend into any human setting and quietly act out the will of the Vagrants. In a way, it is a return to form for Wild cells, utilizing espionage and subterfuge over any direct action or conflict.
Outside of their traditional function as spies, the Void Faes also aspire towards a more unorthodox calling: evolution.
As the human hosts, willing and fully enslaved to the Mindshare, began to slowly integrate into the greater whole, new paradigms and patterns of thought began to emerge. These new infectees and the incubi they contained observed the world around them with eyes unfamiliar to the Vagrants. Humans were not all feeble barbarians, wallowing in their isolation from the psychic web and hive mind of the Nomads. The latent ESP potential within certain members of humanity had demonstrated the possibility for assimilation and more harmonious fusion as an alternate path to reclaiming the Sirius Sector. Little progress has been made in this direction for now.
III. Structure and Operations While the Void Faes are relatively small in scale than their long-gone brethren that once resided within the Heaven's Gate and the Rockhome, ever since their foundation, they've managed to strike and infect several crucial positions within the government and intel services of Gallia, as well as the ranks of MND and Rheinlander Nobles. The estimated number of personnel under the Void Fae influence - be they infected, indoctrinated or simply deceived - has grown from under a hundred to a couple of thousands.
Other agents without any affiliation either to LDV or DND have found themselves a small refuge in a form of Fort Huxter - a fortified facility, composed out of various "excessive and unnecessary" components of Gallic origin, hidden in a remote, desolate system of Tau-61, residing closely to their masters. Additionally, The Void Faes have sheltered a caste of religious cultists, long forgotten and rejected by their kin of K'Hara - The Oracles. Combined, they form a network of unaffiliated observers, indoctrinators and infiltrators.
For their logistic and provisional needs, The Void Faes have come into possession of several CT-39X "Albatross"-class Transports, establishing a consistent source of income by performing routine cargo transporting tasks, taking on special contracts where they can as independent contractors.
