Verteidigung des Rheinvolkes
History
Kriegsflotte (Warfleet) Freya was founded in 788 A.S. as a minor defensive fleet operating out of the Frankfurt system. Focused around the titular Battleship R.N.C. Freya, the detachment has been operating with the Rheinland Military for over 35 years as a guard force throughout the Federal Republic. After completion of the R.N.C. Tannenberg, the final of the fleet's three 'Donau'-class cruisers, the Freya group was redeployed to the southern systems, primarily Omega-11, to defend the enterprising Daumann miners of Solarius in their ever enduring efforts to harvest the natural diamonds of the system. Constantly berated by radiation, persecution, and raids in the form of Hessians from the nearby Freital Base, Freya stood as a symbol of the might of the Chancellor in a system with little law to show for it.
The majority of the Freya Kriegsflotte's history can be tied to her flagship, the Freya standing as a testament to the endurance of the Rheinland people as a whole. From her operations in the far Omegas to the core operations during the infamous Nomad War, the fleet has continued to stand strong. Countless personnel have been assigned and reassigned to and from Freya across the fleet's known operations throughout her history, and while her ships may not be as sturdy as most of their newer counterparts, the Schwerin fleet being a prime example, Freya continues to maintain a cohesive strength about them.
Schatten Complex, Sektor-7, Frankfurt system
Schatten
The Freya fleet, like most things in Rheinland, has ties to many noteworthy landmarks across the Federal Repubic. Most are in plain sight, such as the infamous blockade gate to Frankfurt in New Berlin, Solarius Station in the now defunct Omega-11 system, and many others. Schatten in particular is one that none outside the Military will know about, and is in fact the birthplace of the Freya fleet. Constructed in the original docking yards of the hidden Schatten Construction Yard, the precursor to what would become the Buro's Schatten Research Facility, the fleet has maintained a standing base of operations at Schatten since its founding.
The Freya fleet could be said to have a spiritual tie to the station as a whole, even if the Schatten has been the home of numerous ships throughout the Rheinland Military. Responding to the call of distress after the Bundschuh raid in 800 A.S., the fleet continued to maintain guard at Schatten for the next couple decades. Though being deployed to the front after the breakout of war between Rheinland and Kusari, the Freya fleet was moved back to the Frankfurt system to stand as watch for the system as a whole. Sektor-7 and what lies within were deemed too important for the lone Schlachtschiff Koblenz to guard alone, and Freya's commander, Konteradmiral von Meyer, ordered that the feet take up a defensive position across the system. Border control, especially during wartime, was deemed a strong requirement, and it's doubtful anyone within the Freya fleet opposes.
Tactics
As a defensive flotilla, the Freya fleet operates under the guideline of 'maximum disinterest', opting to shell any intruders with enough firepower so as to dissuade any further incursions. The fleet doesn't utilize any high-end equipment aside from that already mounted as per the Rheinwehr's standard issue, and while modernized most of the fleet is of an aged life, some even refurbished from scrap recovered from the remains of the Nomad War. The Fleet even maintains a few aged 90-ARKM-N9's, the legendary Valkyries, as part of its standard lineup, though operations to refit them for more classical operations are underway.
Lineup
Currently the Freya fleet maintains eight active warships, five multi-role Oder-class gunships and ten wings of fighters. While not an intimidating force by itself, in combination with the Koblenz defensive flotilla, each ship of the Freya's warfleet is still designed to succeed in any situation. As it stands, the current lineup of the Freya fleet consists of:
Battleship R.N.C. Freya
Battlecruiser R.N.C. Jotunheim
Battlecruiser R.N.C. Jurgen von Kuntz
Heavy Cruiser R.N.C. Munster
Heavy Cruiser R.N.C. Stieglitz
Heavy Cruiser R.N.C. Nestor
Heavy Cruiser R.N.C. Vierlande
Heavy Cruiser R.N.C. Halle
Gunboat R.N.C. Bhietigheim
Gunboat R.N.C. Regensburg
Gunboat R.N.C. Neuss
Gunboat R.N.C. Baden
Gunboat R.N.C. Koeln
Chain of Command
As a standard outfit of the Rheinland Military, classical Rheinlandic rank and file is used to note the chain of command. Exceptions are few, but ever present to note individuals of merit and recognition.
The current ranking structure of the Kriegsflotte consists of the following:
High Command
Konteradmiral
The commanding officer of the Freya fleet, the Konteradmiral is in charge of all aspects of the flotilla. From giving orders to awarding commendations, conversing diplomacy between the Freya fleet and the rest of the Bundesrepublik's branches to filing the daily reports, the Konteradmiral has their hands in every basket, cabinet and other receptacle the flotilla has at its disposal.
Flottillenadmiral
The Konteradmiral's right hand, an individual of this rank is the lowest ranking officer of the flotilla's direct command structure. Operating with many of the same privileges of the Konteradmiral, the Flottillenadmiral is responsible for the duties that their superior cannot do alone. They are cleared to actively command any warship in the flotilla, as well as take command of any squadron that they wish.
Mid-Command Officers
The Mid-Command comprises the ranks of Korvettenkapitän, Fregattenkapitän, and Kapitän zur See. These mid-tier officer positions hold various commands across the flotilla, and are authorized to command Oder-class Gunboats, Donau-class Cruisers, and Tirpitz-class Battlecruisers respectively. Each answers to those above them, and the Kapitän zur See only answers to the two Admirals of the flotilla.
Low-Command Officers
The Low-Command is the basic officer pool of the flotilla, and as such maintains the largest reserve of manpower in the flotilla's command structure. Aspiring officers, Leutants and up, populate this tier, and while many take their positions onboard the flotilla's numerous active warships, the vast majority command the numerous wings of fighters that the flotilla operates. They answer to all above their rank, and the highest of the low-tier, the Stabskapitänleutnant, answers only to an officer of the mid-command and up. The Kriegsflotte's Quartiermeister resides in this tier, and aside from those ordered by the admiralty are the only low-tier officers capable of giving orders to mid-tier personnel.
