I mean, if you lack motivation perhaps you shouldn't be in the dev team. This is something that people do voluntarily because they like creating and improving things for everyone. Accepting donations is a whole different matter, but I don't agree with the commission of unique ships - even as a non-dev. Everyone on the server is equally entitled to the content present in the game, I heavily oppose unique ships and weapons. Combining assets which are available to everyone is acceptable (SRPs), even though it's been overdone to death.
Let's not turn Discovery into a pay to win game. I know a lot of these commissions have been aesthetic only, but others haven't.
On a related note, if you really wanna make a quick buck and you're good at 3D modelling and animation just do Overwatch porn, seems like a lucrative market right now.

Patreon is a website used to support people making regular content that is generally desired by a large, or sometimes niche, group of people. Such projects are media content like video creation, webcomics, music, podcasts, and porn. The keyword is regular. Patreon is about giving a level of money monthly to help support the artist to put out content on a regular basis.
However, the style of work you are suggesting is commission work. A single piece of artwork for one person. That doesn't require a group of people paying you for something they most likely won't get to use other than looking at a p3d link. I'd suggest an art blog (Or launching a website) for that.
Also, we already have an issue of devs taking people's money and not committing to the paid job. We don't need more of the problem. If you're serious about getting paid for your work, do so outside of Discovery's forum, but invite people to come to you for the work if you are actually able to do it.
Developers accepting donations is a very reasonable thing. Using developer status to implement comissioned* ships and powers is another. I am willing to support a patreon as long as this doesn't mean anyone or any faction receives special priviledges and you don't turn discoverygc into a pay2win
But it will, same old same old, the rich kids win, they always do.
Folk won't stand a chance when these bribes for factions corrupt the whole game
even more than it is obvious.
I'd delete & request a ban if i saw this happen, that's if i've enough cash eh!
I think patreon for dev's as a whole group would work better than one individual dev getting money.
Everyone works as a team not alone, and when someone submits something to the board and it is approved, then people can donate to the Patreon for everyone's hard work towards Discovery.
I don't think sole Patreon's would work as it could suggest the richest kids of the discovery get what they want and the lower end of the community get left in stain and it would ruin the game.
Also, rules on Patreon's should be allowed
Payments made on behalf of everyone's work (not one single topic or job)
A limit of payment *to disallow people placing too much on the server*
To allow everyone to obtain the same amount of cash, but for the team to ensure everyone is equally pulling weight to collect the cash
-- Obviously these are just guesses, but I think single Patreon's can do more damage than good, I know I'd like you to be paid as well but there must be a careful system where its fair for all, and so that one cannot overdo the next.

I feel these are fairly accurate. Ignoring the dev part that most seem hung up over, I see nothing wrong with someone able to model taking commissions to model on the side.
Patreon however would seem more of a thing for the entire dev team / Server, rather then individual staff members.
Of course it would need to be made clear to anyone that wanted a commission done that there's no guarantee the model will make it in, as people will likely assume it will due to a (currently) dev making it.
I like the discussion so far, thanks for staying on-topic, guys.
Thinking further about it, there is also the following option - just a paypal for donations, upon completion of community-voted content (I suggest a few content types that I want to work on and the community picks the one that they want or like more). Upon and during completion of the task, donations can be accepted per paypal (with shoutouts to those who donated, of course) and this way we can make progress for the mod AND me personally (while I cover some of my living costs during my dev work).
I mostly want to focus on upgrading assets and adding already approved models. Example: new asteroid models, bases, unique turret/gun models, upgrading low-quality ships, etc. I DO NOT want to create content that is not beforehand approved - to those voicing their concerns that it's "pay to win" - rest assured, it won't be. The community gets to vote on the content that I work on (and I will submit the list of things I want to work on for people to vote on). That way, everyone is happy.

This topic was brought up several times in the past regarding Discovery, especially internally, and the answer was always no. Why? Because this is a free mod. It was founded on that principle and really shouldn't be up for discussion in the first place. Disco isn't intended to make money. It's fully logical when it comes to server/management bills as no one makes a profit off it. It's less logical when it comes to a developer(s) in the current context as it is straight up with the intent of making a profit.
As it's been brought up, I'd like to stress setting up a patreon to "reward" the dev team as a whole will in all likelyhood get Discovery nuked pretty quickly as you are dealing with a Microsoft product. The game might be abandoned, but it is still copyrighted and therefore a Microsoft game. Considering Discovery is not compliant with Microsoft's Game Content Usage Rules, I would truly suggest not to do anything that would get Microsoft's attention. Setting up a patreon for the benefit of developers will be considered as financial gains, which is not allowed by the GCUR. It is not worth killing the mod to make a quick buck, because you are not even going to make much of a profit considering the amount of people left here.
As an individual, a patreon is not the right way to go with what you seem to have in mind. As Miaou rightfully pointed out, it is more logical to approach this kind of work with commissions. Commissions are done everywhere (hello Deviantart) when you want to offer your services or buy the services of an individual. It is absolutely possible to commission shiplines, unique ships and whatever else but it comes with the understanding this work is performed as an agreement between two individuals outside of Discovery's scope. The reasoning to use should not be "I'm making this ship for Discovery mod", but instead "I'm making a model for person X". Apply this rule and no one will piss in your shoes as the agreement will solely be between two individuals and the community will have nothing to do with it. The price and what will be delivered will be entirely outside of the community's scope, as it should be.
Does it matter anymore?
If it turns out to be a good thing, neat. If it ends up killing disco - oh well.
EDIT: If it ends up with MS pooping on us - took them long enough.
