I believe the correct term would be 'wormhole'. A tunel that can bend time and space, and can link two points by folding through another dimension, instantly.
In theory.
On the other hand.. black holes are basically... space/time eaters.

Pretty much, i like to think that it's sortof a blackhole/portal thing that sucks you in at great speed and throws you through the centre somwhere in the void and out the other side in another part of space.
True indeed, same can be said about their approach on the speed of light, population of planets and stations, sizes of systems and bases, shape of ships, gravitational effects, asteroid fields, ...
Jeez, come to think of it, did they actually think things over when they made the game?
Yes they did think about it. the goal was to make an extremely playable game & they succeeded in spades as evidenced by the fact that we are all here now still playing the game. Simply put, there are & always will be aspects of the game that are unrealistic, but hey, that's the choices they made.
Universal Combat is a game that is sorta similar to FL'er & MUCH more realistic, but it's tedious to play & the instruction book is a nightmare to learn (& yes, I said book, not booklet...that 100+ page badboy can bruise your foot if it landed there when dropped)
What that guy above me said. Freelancer was never designed to be a science based simulation. It's not a simulation, it's much closer to a first person shooter than any kind of realistic physics model.

On a side note, how come you have to dock with one to get pulled in, and why are the asteroids not pulled in as well?
Well, unlike a black hole, the wormhole does not suck matter in it. In order to travel, you must get very close to the event horizon of the wormhole. And as freelancer stellar objects are all stationary, nothing will cross that event horizon.
And again, I'm only talking unproved theory here, based on what I've read.
