Ships & Tech: Gallic Military (Enclave) & Gallic Civilian

History

In 817 A.S. (733 A.G.S.) the Kingdom of Gallia interfered in the Tau War between Bretonia and Kusari. That started a conflict that lasted almost 10 years, spanned the Taus, most of Bretonia, a part of Liberty, and even echoed as far as in the Omegas. The conflict culminated in the New London Blitz in 826 A.S (742 A.G.S.), when Gallia went all out in a gamble to end the war. At a great cost, and with the help of all their allies, the Bretonians managed to repel the attack. That was the beginning of the end for the war.

Pushed back from New London, the Gallic Navy made the only logical choice: secure their conquest and deal as much damage to Bretonia as possible to deter any immediate reprisal. That resulted in the Purging of Leeds. For a week straight, Triumph-class destroyers bombarded the planet, methodically cleansing it of any traces of Bretonian resistance, infrastructure, and any unlucky souls who got stranded on the planet.

Meanwhile in Gallia, the Council capitalized on the absence of the bulk of the Navy and marched through Picardy, Orleanais, and Provence straight to planet New Paris. Scared of the possible consequences of the revolution, many people evacuated to the newly-conquered Bretonian systems. King Charles XI disappeared from the scene around the same time, presumably comatose after the attack on his liner by the Maquis.

New Paris was about to become a second New London, with Council and Royal Navy fleets clashing in orbit. However, the worst didn't come to pass. Right befor the final battle, the powers-that-remained in Gallia negotiated a ceasefire, paving the way towards the end of the Second Gallic War. However, not everyone was happy with how things went in Sirius.

That senseless act of genocide in Leeds drew a wedge into the Navy. Some officers couldn't accept what they had been ordered to do. When the orders came down to secure the Gallic Hebrides, not everyone complied. Those who decided that their duty lied with depending Gallia left the Hebrides, refusing to follow the orders of a person they considered a madman.

However, there were also those who remained in Edinburgh, rechristened Aquitaine. Their reasons were different. The more selfless stayed behind to protect Gallic people in the Hebrides from Bretonian reprisal. Hardline royalists couldn't accept a Gallia where the Council had won. Revanchists cherished the dream of resuming the war and winning it eventually. And the last, but not least, there were opportunists — those who saw the turmoil as a way to power, riches, or fulfilling their other goals.

All these people had to work together to survive, establishing what would later be known as Enclave Defense Authority — a conglomerate of still-operational military units that survived the last battles of the war.

Current State

The Enclave is now faced with many challenges. Battlegroups are still being reorganized, accounting for those who died in the Blitz or defected afterwards. The old command hierarchy is in shambles, and a new one is being established. Planet Bordeaux (formerly known as Gaia) is full of Gallic citizens and Bretonian serfs. The planet lacks food and housing for them all. The living and working conditions are bound to be terrible at first. There are concerns that the King may have died, and that there is no heir. The spreading rumors about the members of DeFrance family still in Hebrides don't help.

Dealing with all of that will be a challenge. However, the officers who stayed behind are determined to secure their future, claim their place in Sirius, and eventually retake Gallia.

Diplomacy

The Enclave posseses many more foes than friends. The traitors who now seem to be in power in Gallia will likely disavow us. Our actions in Leeds will likely make us the scapegoat of the Gallic war. Overcoming that animosity will be a challenge. But our immediate concern is to build the economy and become self-sufficient. There're only so many allies we need for that purpose.

Allies
  • Ile-de-France Shipping — they are supposedly still loyal to the Gallic Crown.

Friendlies
  • Corsairs — they assisted the Royal Navy Armada during New London Blitz.
  • Independent Miners Guild — they cooperated with Gallic forces during the war, and share our disdain for Bretonia and Outcasts.

Neutrals
  • Everyone not listed in any other category.

Unfriendlies
  • The Brotherhood — they sided with Bretonians and Gaians during New London Blitz.
  • The Lane Hackers — they engaged Gallic forces during the Blitz, but ultimately we have no bone to pick with them.
  • The Mollys — they may be upset with the actions of Embrun cohort in Newcastle. For now, their fight in Dublin aids our cause.
  • Gallic Corporations — they will be reminded of their duty, should they work for the usurpers in Gallia.

Hostiles
  • Kingdom of Bretonia — our archnemesis during the war.
  • Republic of Liberty — the main ally of Bretonia, and the reason why we lost the war.
  • Outcasts — an ally of Bretonia during the war, and a major threat to the Gallic way of life.
  • Crayter Republic — a minor ally of Bretonia, and our competitor in the Taus.
  • Gaians — a nuisance during the war, and a threat to our activities on planet Bordeaux (formerly Gaia).
  • Gallic lawfuls — the traitors who usurped the power and rejected the monarchy.
  • Gallic unlawfuls — a threat to the Gallic people we are still sworn to protect.

Goals & Objectives

• Secure Gallic Hebrides.
• Locate resources for continued survival and colony development.
• Acquire a larger fleet and more means to maintain it.
• Undermine the new illegitimate Gallic regime.
• Grow the Enclave beyond its current borders.
• Help those who oppose Bretonia, Liberty, and Crayter.
• Terminate anyone threatening the King's subjects.
• Exact revenge on Bretonia and its allies.
• Reinstate monarchy in Gallia.

Ranks and Duties

The Enclave forces consist of many units, varying greatly in size and organization. This is a result of a chain of command being shaken by casualties during the Blitz, and many desertions after the Purging of Leeds. Officers from the Army, Navy, and Intelligence had to work out a joint military structure to give the newly-formed Enclave Defense Authority a semblance of organization that the Royal Navy had.

The new structure doesn't always work: some people feel they've been mistreated during rank distribution. Venerable battlegroup commanders may take a risk and refuse to follow orders of "cheeky upstarts", yesteay's inferiors who have gotten too far up, and too quickly. Intrigues and plotting are a norm. Prominent officers always have to watch their back and ensure support of their peers or subordinates.

For better or worse, this is what the Enclave Defense Authority is now. Whether or not it will stand the test of time, is another story.

Leadership (Platine)

Commandeur Suprême de l'ADE
Supreme Commander of the Enclave Defense Authority. A role rather than a rank. Usually filled by one of the top-tier officers.

Commandeur Exécutif de l'ADE

An officer entrusted with commanding one of the remaining battleships, and its cohort.

Capitaine Principal
Experienced capitaine who is ready to lead their peers into battle. Can command battlecruisers.

Capitaine
An officer who has earned respect of their peers and forced the superiors to take note. Can command cruisers.

Low Tier (Bronze)

Lieutenant Principal
The brightest of the bronze-tier officers. Are authorized to command Perilous-class gunboats.

Lieutenant
These pilots have shown command competence. Allowed to command a squadron or an Enclave transport ship.

Sous-Lieutenant
Newly-inducted members who have proven at least minimal worth to the EDA. Gain access to freighters.

Aspirant
Probational members of the Enclave Defense Authority. Cannon fodder. Have access to fighters and bombers.

New Enclave Nobility

Despite being an offshoot of the unfair regime run by a military junta, the Gallic Royal Enclave is an improvement in some ways. Its command system is a good example. Without the almost infinite resources and manpower of old, the Enclave puts talent first now. When it comes to your rank and duties, the achievements of your ancestors mean next to nothing. In a way, it is almost a meritocracy.

The same approach is now making its way into the civic structure of the Enclave. Power over land and people is granted to those who have shown their capabilities, and in recognition of their service. With enough dedication, yesterday's commoners might find themselves having a town or land, along with a fancy title. Titles are reserved for Gallic-born citizens, but people from Sirius can exercise almost the same authority as magistrates, supervisors, et cetera.

Another, less evident and discussed reason for this change is the traitorous exodus of a considerable number of officers and nobles from the Hebrides back to Gallia, be it in the hopes of Council's pardon or recognition by the opportunists from the Duchy of Burgundy. To counter that, the Enclave seeks to grant loyal servants a place to call their own, and in so doing, tie them to the Hebrides even more.

The titles are split into tiers, much like the military ranks, but a title tier doesn't have to much the rank tier. Naturally, the old nobility of Gallia sneer at this "noblesse nouvelle". But in the Gallic Hebrides they have to do so in secret, unless they have more merits than those they look down on.

Tier Platine

Roi / Reine
The one and only true King or Queen of the Enclave and, by extension, Gallia. His or her word is law.

Regent
The person who rules the Enclave when the monarch is a minor, is absent, or is incapacitated.

Prince / Princesse
A descendant (however remote) of a King of Gallia. The families related to DeFrance still wield considerable power.

Tier Or

Duc / Duchesse / Governor General
Controls a large region that includes multiple cities.

Marquis / Marquise / Governor
Controls an area spanning multiple settlements, towns, and facilities.

Tier Argent

Comte / Comtesse / Magistrate
Controls a large town with a large adjacent rural area, or a city.

Vicomte / Vicomtesse / Administrator
Controls a major facility, a town with a medium-sized adjacent rural area, or a city district.

Tier Bronze

Baron / Baronesse / Supervisor
Controls a facility or a small rural area with a settlement.
