I am Alastair. I played Discovery years ago. I think it was back in 2012 or something like that. Anyways I am back, but I see loads have changed. And while I have applied for Veteran Support I am wondering if it isn't just better to just start fresh.
I used to play outcasts back when I used to play Disco. Mainly because I was a fan of the design of the OG border worlds ships like the Saber and Stiletto.
Now I am at a loss as to what faction to play. I see the wiki is kind of out of date so I cant really go on that for ship information.
At this point I am unsure if I want to play lawful or unlawful. Or kinda in between, quasi-lawful? Are there quasi-lawful factions?
You might as well consider me a brand new player at this point as I have been gone so long. I kinda want to maybe play outcasts again. But are they active in terms of player numbers and interactions? And how does one play an outcast these days from an RP perspective. I was thinking of making a character revolving around a story arc kind of like THIS.
Liberty Navy or LSF spy is running silent near planet Malta. Ships systems are all disabled except for basic life support and sensor suites. This makes the ships power signature negligible and most sensors would dismiss the vessel's barely there signature as background noise. However when the pilot attempts to restart the ships systems, a malfunction occurs with the engines causing him to crash land or something like that.
He is discovered by a Maltese family and is taken in as a slave. After several years and several escape attempts he finally accepts his lot in life. He becomes a loyal servant to this family up to the point where I guess you could say he is like the head slave, the slave in charge of all the slaves. He becomes a confidant of his master and is even allowed to provide his opinion when asked. And I dunno. Maybe the don or whoever the head of the family is dies and with no remaining heir leaves the estate to my character, who over the years became sympathetic to the Maltese and eventually became Maltese in all but birth. or something like that?
Anyways let me know what you guys think about that sort of RP arc for an outcast character.
I also seem to remember having a few graphics mods going. I seem to remember having I think it was an ENB mod or something going. Do we still have those? I also seem to remember having a nicer HUD. Some of the official Disco screenshots I saw now on the homepage have an upgraded hud very similar to the one I had. How do I download and install those again?
Anyways. See you around in the 'verse (until the SC 'verse becomes a thing lol)

Several.
I think the best fit for you would be the Junkers. Less oddball history to get adjusted to, plenty of room to roam, and good gameplay flexibility. If you don't want to go indie, the Junker Congress is a solid faction from all my interactions with them, sometimes you just have to badger Vulk about replying to things.
There's also the Hogosha and the Unione Corse.
And Natio Octavarium, which I help run - a "legitimate" colony founded by mostly-reformed pirates and smugglers, but also with a significant refugee population. We have a bit more oddball history to adjust to though, and some limitations to our ID, so I think a vanilla faction's a better fit when you're getting readjusted. But applications are open nonetheless. You could also fly indie NO, but we don't have any rumors in-game (yet) so that'd be a little tough. I've been working on getting some written.
Now, for your Outcast idea.
The estate being left to a former slave is a bit odd, but not entirely. Due to Malta's godawful birth rate, a decent number of their citizens were slaves. I'd adjust the arc a bit to have him as a free man for a fair bit of time before the inheritance though.

Is the Outcast playerbase very active? I cant remember the lore but how does a slave become a freeman?
Activity's been pretty variable for a while but the Imperial Coalition seems to be pretty active and pushing for more. It's a good time to roll Outcast, I think.
There's not really a standard process for a slave being freed, AFAIK. Given that the slaves are the property of their owners, I'd assume there's a fair bit of room for variation.

Ok thats awesome. I seem to remember that in order to start with a particular faction you typed in something like "start-outcasts" or something like that. Is that applicable still.
You don't have to, but it certainly speeds it along. You're thinking of /restart. Use /showrestarts in chat to list the codes, find the one you want, and then /restart HsOutcastBw (for example).
Remember that this overwrites your current ship, wallet, reps, etc with a template, so only use it on a fresh character.

Great stuff. This is a great help. I think with the outcast character it will be a fresh start. I will figure out what to do with the Veteran Aid character if I get it or when I get it. At this point it matters not. I am treating this from the perspective of a complete newb as I basically am as I cant remember anything. So might as well start from the beginning.
Anyways I am also going through the tutorials section. I am looking for any sort of graphics mods and stuff to aid this game along. As it does show its age a bit, but have not had much luck yet. Can you point me in the right direction?
I still fire up DOSbox sometimes, so Disco's never bothered me. Someone else might be more helpful there though, or you could try on the Discord server - click Player Utilities on the topbar, then Discord Help Channel

Hey there. Yes I found the Swag pack. I am pretty sure I used it in my old disco play through as well. Just a quickie. Is Swag pack and Ultimate Freelancer compatible with one another?
