Also, is there a way to play this game either in borderless or in a windowed mode that doesn't "swallow" your mouse? (where it doesn't allow you to click on anything else until you close DF).
Edit: Ok so...going to basic windowed seems to work for some reason in fixing the bug but...that's not exactly optimal, especially since DF can't track the movement of the mouse outside the game window.
freelancer is too ancient for borderless windowed, any program that forces it usually ends up with your cursor being misaligned
unless someone else has found a solution, the only thing you can really do is alt-enter as needed, such as when in combat, then alt-entering back to windowed for normal alt-tabbing goodness

That would be fine if the game didn't block the usage of the mouse for anything other than itself half the time.
i think i know what you mean, cant click anywhere except discovery
the only fix i know of is to hit your Start menu button on your keyboard, hit tab once, then down arrow, then space bar, then down, then spacebar again to lock the computer. you'll regain access to your mouse and can just unlock it
its convoluted but welcome to 17 year old games on modern operating systems

Alternatively you can Ctrl + Alt + Del then Esc works for me to release the mouse.
