I have a question for the community. Suggestions are welcome, flameing is not.
My question is this:
Does attacking a trader player's character (assuming that the player belongs to another faction) count as an act of hostility between the players' other faction.
OK if that was hard to understand:
Basicly player one is trading and gets attacked by a another player but player one belongs to another faction. Does attacking player one imply an act of hostility agaist that players other chars factions??
Please give me some feedback on this: I need to know how to address this so it does not become a problem for anyone.

Hmm, it depends:
(Faction names used for illustration only)
If player B has a freelance trader that does work for AW (ie. trader belongs to player who is primarily AW) and is attacked by the SSO, the AW would not change position since in their mind the attack was on the freelancer not on them. If however, AW knew that the SSO was attacking the trader because of his dealings with AW, the AW might then take offense for that reason (motives are important).
In most cases, I would presume that an attack on a freelance trader, should have no effect on their other faction chars (at least it shouldn't). Otherwise the trader isn't really freelance. Guess it also depends how neutral the trader is.
Hehe, this ones a good question for discussion
Yep I agree with wolfpack, it isn't justafiable if you a re a freelancer char and you attack a trader and then suddleny u started a war or something along the lines of that. Hope thats not whats gonna hapeen bettween the PMG, SCRA debate.....
But my humble opinion is that each char is exactly that. A seperate character. I have 4, each with their own personality. One might blow you out of the water, a moment later, I switch and do a transfer for you. Each is different.
If it's not tagged, it's 100% freelance. however if they've been contracted to do something for another clan.. then.. well.. That's clan politics for ya.
IMHO, if the trader is not tagged, it shouldn't affect any faction status. If it is tagged, such as [GoR], SF, whatever.. then yeah.. it'd affect status.
Just my two cents (inflatation included)

What I do, at least with AW, is if they are not AW tagged traders, they don't get our protection. If one of our members wishes to avoid hostilities with others and make freelance, then we cannot protect the trader unless paid to do so, or if they are on the protected list.
This old chestnut again, though it hasn't been up for debate for a while ...
Each character should have its own identity, and should not cross over with your others
unless there is a very good RP reason for that to occur.
Again, those attacking should also have a good reason for doing it in the first place,
Otherwise it just gets personal, and the whole point of roleplay goes out the bloody
window.
Nothing new there then ...

Exactly, I make it a point to check the ID of any ship I pass in all my characters.
If it's got an ID from a faction that is hostile to the faction ID I'm using then I attack it, usually with a warning.
Though any players flying pass my characters with a faction tag that is hostile, or if they are red on my HUD, will be attacked without any warnings because they are hostile.
I still try to check their ID first, unless they're already shooting me.
If I find a faction ID that has no relation to the tag they've got then I ask them about it, if they didn't want their current tag or are trying to change it I leave them alone.
As for the question, it depends on the circumstances.
If the factions are suppose to be friendly and a player from one attacks a tagged player-trader from the other then I'd say that it's grounds for a revenge strike at the very least.
If the player-trader has nothing to do with any other faction then it's just piracy or terrorism.
But people still have to check ID's and remember that you can only attack a neutral, freelance or zoner ID'd trader if they refuse to drop cargo.
Plus you shouldn't really be pirating traders ID'd as a faction that is hostile to the ID your using, you should be shooting them on sight because they are hostile.
It mostly boils down to using some common sense and thinking before reacting.
You can always PM the leader of whatever faction the player doing the shooting/pirating is in to ask whats going on, if it was a member acting without orders, or a mistake then it'll be solved without a faction war.
I still think the ID thing complicates it too much for a lot of players. 2 out of 5 vessels that I scan are sporting a Civilian ID (I'm talking about level 45+ characters, trains, container transports, VHFs, gunboats, cruisers, battleships...).
When asked about it the usual excuses are:
I don't care :hehehe:
I'm working on it
I can't find a neutral ID
not necessarily in that order.
For most faction tags and IDs, it takes you a whole 1 hour and 30 minutes (more or less) to get, provided you got 2 mil startup money (this will get you in VHF too), it takes 1 bribe and 3 assassination/prisoner/loot missions tops for the desired faction (one more trick at the begining to loose the LN/LPI green which I won't tell, it's not hard to figure out, hint: find my posts with GNN in them), or a simple double bribe and 1 mission if you have the money (and that's from ANY reputation you have, just be untagged).
From a basic Starflyer and 8500 credits to level 35 and tag and buying an ID, it's some 3-4 hours (you wouldn't have the VHF as you've lost 1mil on the ID).
Problem with it is that people are just too lazy or don't care. It wouldn't be so hard just having the original faction tags, but whatever...
rant over,
