[font=Book Antiqua]Hello, a friend of mine made the mistake of upgrading his computer to one with Vista windows on it. Now he is unable to play any of his favorite games (like AOE 2 and chessmaters 10). I have searched far and wide on the internet, but I cannot find a good thinking game for him that does not require too much micro-managing.
Though he is a Babalyon 5 & Startrek fan, loves history, politics, and mystery, but he does NOT like multiplayer games.
Infact his idea of a good game is playing Age of Empires 2 and building neat organized towns & farms. I tried suggesting SimCity games, but those he WILL not touch...
what about the Command & Conquer series, those are fun to.
If he however prefers to have a wide selection of different factions to play with i would go more in the likes of rise of nations or maybe AoE 3
As far as I know, AOE will work in Vista. If all else fails, right click on the .exe then go to properties and then compatibility. You will see a drop down menu that allows you to treat the game like a previous OS.
The closest game that works on Vista for sure is Age of Mythology and Age of Empires 3. And actually, AOE3 was made by the same company, except Big Huge games joined in. Oddly, AOE2 involves a lot of destruction and army building...
If he wants empire building, he should try the civilization series. For a simpler, but just as fun turn based game, try the Age of Wonders Series.
And of course, there are those really old city building games from activision...Zeus and Poseidon for Greek cities, Pharoh (multiple versions of this one) for Egyptian cities, and Caesar for Roman cities. If he wants sole city building, then those games are the best, as everything revolves around city building.
The Empire Earth series (specifically the latest one) stress, go figure, empire building, which is similar to city building.
He should be able to find a match for him among those.

If empire building is his thing, then Civilisation IV is the best out there, and it works on Vista. Incredible game, uses up ten hours of my life before I know it... :D
It's true, the new Empire Earth is a letdown, but the older ones are good. Other good RTS's include Rise of Nations and Age of Mythology. If he doesn't want any of those, however, it is relatively easy to play AOE2 on Vista... just do what Dark said.
However, for gaming, I wouldn't bother upgrading to Vista. XP is far, far better when it comes to gaming, a lot simpler.
Transport Tycoon perhaps.
All about managing a Transportation network. Really good fun.
MP is actually fun if you want it when everyone starts at the same time.
Great old game and is open source now too and I think it does run on vista.
Or
Roller Coaster Tycoon 2. Had lots of fun with that as well.
Try Railroad Tycoon 3 or Railroads! Only building and no conflict..
Or Caesar III which has a bit of war but not as much as AOE. C3 is a very good game. C4 is also out but I
grew out of it by then...
I tried C3 after AOE2/3 it's much better as it focusses more on city building and efficiency than on the military aspect - The variations available on this is just awesome and you can learn a lot about the romans from this game - Insane amount of info available in the game cards.
