I would like to install a version of Ubuntu, or something, just to see how it is. It would be on a second partition, dual booting with Vista.
So I'd like to know, is Ubuntu the only or best version of Linux that is free?
What are the pros and cons of Ubuntu vs Windows, why is it better or worse?
Dual booting with Vista is possible... right? I did Xubuntu with XP on my old, now broken, laptop a couple years ago, but I can't remember much.
Just give me some Linux/Ubuntu info here... the biggest point of me doing this is for fun and to learn a bit about Linux. I just need a foothold to get started.
1. Linux is free, no matter what distro it is;)
2. Pros/Cons: Well where to start.....Pro, linux is far more secure then windowz. Con, Not many games are compatible with linux, but they can be made compatible but is hell to do so. Pro, Linux has a "Sypnatic package manager".....or what ever its called. Its pretty shows a list of programs you can install, and you just click and it installs it off the web. Con, A complex command prompt, aka terminal, that takes a while to get used to and learn all the commands. Theres just so many pros and cons, it would take a while to list em all:lol:
3. Yes, dual booting is possible. I myself have dual booted ubuntu with vista, and ubuntu with xp.
4. Wait....what was number 4?
5. Linux/Ubuntu info.....coming right up! http://distrowatch.com/
not really info, but it has a wholeeeeee list of different linux distros. Find the one you want and download it. The only thing you WOULD have to pay for is if you order a disk, other wise download it and burn it to disk. Pretty much each and every linux site has some information on thier distro so i would recommend reading the ones you like.
P.s: Distro is pretty much like a different style.......think of linux distros as operating systems, theres windows and there's macs........with linux, its the same way, each distro has its own "style" or "Flavor". in lamest terms, their all different lol
Visit ubuntu's site, they have tons of stuff that could help with that, like....a large user base that could allllll tell you how they did their eye candy. Also theres tons of themes you can download for ubuntu

Anyone?
I'm a Ubuntu-addict.
There's not such thing as a "best" distro of Linux. It depends on your preferences. Ubuntu is a great distribution for people who are new to Linux because there is a great community behind it. There's support on forums, IRC, mailing lists, launchpad, google etc. If you use Ubuntu be sure to register at the Ubuntu Forums. I've installed Ubuntu for a few friends, and they're just in love with it.
However, your hardware could make the install experience less than painless. Before you install, google each component to make sure it'll work properly, and maybe find a howto. Also, boot to a live CD. I installed Ubuntu 7.04 like 8 times in the first week I used Linux. Each time, I learned something new though! Don't fear, Ubuntu has come a long way since then.
Anyway I'm just rambling. I get excited when people turn to Open Source Software!
That sounds sweet, it's making me more interested:D
I'll go register at the forums now. GParted didn't want to partition the drive, and I think it's because it's too fragmented. So I'm defragmenting now... which is taking ages and ticking me off...
I'll go look around and figure out cool themes and eye candy stuff. This is gonna be fun:D
Is there a way I can tell Ubuntu to check all my hardware on a live CD? I don't like checking everything... I'm lazy:P But I guess if I have to...
Ok, I kinda half heartedly tried to get wifi to work, but didn't succeed. My wifi light on my computer stayed orange, not like the normal blue. Does this mean it didn't have drivers, or I just wasn't connected? When I was in there I didn't see a list, I had to create a connection. I know what our password is, but I don't know what type it is exactly... so I guess a couple. So if the light not going normal doesn't mean something... I could have done the wifi setup wrong.
I can try again...
And I'll look through this site, although I don't know what half of these even mean:P I guess I better read up.
Hmm, well find out what wireless card you're using... the quickest way is to use lspci. Once you get that, I'd go right to the forums. Many people have probably tested your hardware already and have found solutions. In fact, look here: LaptopTestingTeam. I'm assuming it's a lappy because you have wifi.
If you don't have any luck on the forums or wiki, I'd seriously google "howto <insertwificard> ubuntu" or "howto <insertwificard> linux"
If you need to see whether or not you're picking up networks you can use the network manager, but I find using "sudo iwlist scanning" in the terminal to be more effective. NetworkManager has trouble coming out of suspend at times.
Ok, it seems that Broadcom cards have trouble with Linux.
However,I already googled my computer model and "linux" and got some guy that blogged about installing it on the same model. He posted a website that explains how to get the driver and the terminal codes needed. I'll try that, and if it doesn't work, I'll try those things you said.
All I have to do now is wait for this flippin retarded defrag so I can resize the partition to install...
