Cari Lane Hackers,
My name is Fiorella Arianna de Marco and perhaps you met me while I was travelling through Liberty aboard my own ship, the Amalfi, or perhaps you did not.
While I am not directly affiliated with any major Maltese groups at this moment, I am cooperating closely with two of them and I am reviewing our Network in its current state.
I would like to hear or read your own take on the current situation in Liberty, especially around the blackmarket affairs, per favore.
Have you experienced any setbacks or successes in the past year? Is there anything we should be worried about?
I will be awaiting your replies.
Cordiali saluti,
Fiorella Arianna de Marco.

After a meeting with Signor Oberhauser near Rochester, I was asked to renew this communication channel between you and me - and I am true to my word.
Coincidentally, I am working on another report for the Dons of Malta regarding the situation around our Network - I would be interested in your perspective on the situation in Liberty and especially if you know anything about the planned security measures involving Rochester by the Junkers. Although it has been some time since the station was almost destroyed by the Xenos, the danger is still there.
It would seem that our paths have met yet again, just a few days after our last pleasant interaction outside Mactan Base.
I am pleased to tell you that your network in and around Liberty is held up well. While the Lane Hacker smuggling operations are not the biggest amongst unlawful organizations as our primary focus is not smuggling, smooth Cardamine flow is still established through various ways with or without the help of our allies. There have been no setbacks connected to Liberty's blackmarket affairs to my knowledge, if I lack necessary information in the matter of setbacks I trust that my colleagues will inform you of such.
As far as the matter of Rochester is concerned, all I know regarding the base are things I heard from rumors. The rumors speak of the Xenos launching a surprise attack against the station and catching its defenses off-guard, dealing heavy damage in the process. The station should be repaired by now, as the above events seem to have happened a considerable time ago. The danger of an imminent attack is, of course, still there, but I do not think the Inner Circle currently has the resources or the manpower to dedicate to the matter of defending Rochester from an after-attack that might never come.
The best... "offer" I can make for you at the time, Miss Fiorella de Marco, is to provide any intelligence we have regarding Rochester to you in the course of our routine activities.

Although Rochester has been repaired a while ago and remains operational to this day - the fact that the Xenos attacked such a key station for our Network and successfully put it out of commission for an unacceptable amount of time remains troubling. Our business was interrupted for several weeks because of this and we lost many clients - whether they died or switched to Stabiline because of it.
I do not need to remind you what the complete destruction of Rochester would mean for our market. Unfortunately for all involved, the Xenos still retain their ability to attack the space station because none of the Rogues or Junkers have yet figured out exactly what they hit with - and as such - it could not be destroyed.
What is even more disturbing to me personally and to Malta, however, is that no measures have been taken to strenghten Rochester's security, and the Junkers themselves are not even answering my questions about it. I have spoken to Signor Hemlocke regarding this, yet the Liberty Rogues themselves cannot do much to strengthen the station's security as their presence would attract too much attention from the authorities.
If Rochester falls, the Xenos will win. Without Rochester, there is almost no business with Cardamine and Artifacts. It would be supremely wise to devise and implement countermeasures if you, the Junkers and Liberty Rogues want to maintain a black market in Liberty against the Xenos. The Cardamine trade needs to be as stable as possible in order for us to keep getting more and more clients. Any further shocks will have a negative impact on demand in Liberty and elsewhere as Cardamine will lose its image due to the inconsistency of supply.
Do you have any closer contacts among the Junkers who could help shed some light on the situation surrounding Rochester and its possible security? Also, if you were able to get information regarding the Xenos and any hints as to what they might do exactly to destroy Rochester - I would be grateful if you would share it with me as well.

Although the Rochester issue is not resolved - and I guess it will take us some time to resolve the whole situation - I would like to ask you a question from a completely different perspective.
I am sure you have already noticed that I use one of your scanners. I was wondering if you could make a completely new scanner for my vessel with a few modifications. Mainly, it would have to be able to operate at a much higher power output comparable to the scanners on battlecruisers and battleships to extend its effective range. I am well aware that my vessel like the Amalfi cannot generate that kind of power at the moment, yet that is something I will take care of later with shipwrights back in Omicron Alpha.
If you do such commissions - what would be the estimated cost for something like this, Signora Krest?
I have been invited to field your question about the matter of our scanner technology. While I imagine that you purchased a scanner from one of our reputable technology distributors, I am presently working remotely and do not have the information to hand that would inform me of which particular scanner model you are in possession. While every scanner we stock has been modified to improve performance, and utilizes adaptive software to autonomously craft bespoke processes for each unique ship load-out to optimize operation, some of our models are inevitably better than others.
Given your position Signora, I imagine you have been adequately delegated resourcing to acquire our Minified Spyglass Scanner (MSS), utilising our state-of-the-art hardware, and our latest, cutting edge software. This purchase represents the absolute best in scanner technology in Sirius, and is only improved upon further by incremental updates as devised by our research and development teams, who continue to test and upgrade all aspects of our scanner technology every day. Software updates are provided ex gratis and automatically applied anywhere within range of our networks, and hardware upgrades are more infrequent, being available for a modest parts and service charge at any of our authorised distributors.
My point in explaining this is to highlight that there is no such advancement available that we do not apply to this top of the line scanner technology, and so a new custom design is likely to, as any experimental prototype would do, underperform until the design is sufficiently refined. We are able to create custom fittings for ships not able to equip modern modular scanners, in order to retrofit an MSS or another of our more affordable scanners, and we are also able to adjust cosmetic aspects of our equipment to customer needs. I suggest a deep metallic purple; it really brings out the nebulae.
Finally, the MSS alters power throughput commensurate with the available power from the ship through the aforementioned software controls. While performance inevitably scales with available power, our scanner technology is so efficient that almost any ship can provide enough raw energy to see the maximum potential of our scanners realized. We are also able to provide power core upgrades to any vessel not capable of adequate power delivery in order to avoid wasted capacity. For example, a technique our scanners use in the case of inadequate power for real-time full-spectrum high-range scans, is to pool energy in a matrix of capacitors before discharging energy into the system in bursts. This allows the system to achieve maximum theoretical scanner range, intermittently sacrificing contact update speed and introducing subtle lag, but only when you do not need real-time input.
I trust this has been enough information to satisfy you and any within your organisation Signora. Believe me when I say I am motivated to ensure you have access to the best products amongst all of Hispania. If I have been mistaken and you are currently operating one of our more affordable, if less powerful models, I do not doubt that you will be seeking to acquire a Minified Spyglass Scanner at your first convenience. I humbly invite you to seek out your new equipment from our nearest convenient technology vendor, who I will inform to expect your arrival so that your order may be prepared. Do contact us with any further queries.

Thank you for your comprehensive clarification of the situation regarding your Minified Spyglass Scanner technology and my options. A questo punto, I can abandon any thoughts of an experimental scanner with multiplied nominal power.
One more theoretical thought occurred to me - if I wanted more perfect survey and scanning capabilities on my ship - would it be possible to use, for example, two interconnected Minified Spyglass Scanners? One operating within standard parameters while the other would emit stronger pulses for extra range, but at a lower frequency to not overstrain its components. What do you think about this proposition, Signor Glass?
It is a very expensive solution, yet the credits are not an issue for me. I have installed computer cores with quantum multiplexors in my ship in the past - and the Inner Circle provided me with software for them. With additional software modifications, it should be more than able to handle the complex outputs from two sets of scanners to calculate the actual situation around the ship at short and long range.
Finally, my existing scanner aboard the Amalfi is already in a somewhat unsatisfactory state hardware-wise. I have not been able to trace its history accurately, but I presume it went through several owners before it got to my predecessor. I am guessing it will need a complete inspection, repair and replacement of the obsolete components from my existing scanner along with a full firmware upgrade. The bet base where this can be done in relative peace will probably be Cochrane due to the extensions it has, am I correct?

I do believe that I have found the solution to my problem - all I have to do now is to get two of your scanners of the same origin and series.
Would it be possible for you to have two of the latest and newest Minified Scanners ready for me at one of your bases for quick pick up? And, of course, also provide me with an account to which I should send the necessary 500,000,000 credits, per favore.
My apologies, I was operating under the impression that both the matter I was invited to address would be a lesser concern, and that Miss Krest would continue to manage your enquiry. That being said, it is my pleasure to continue talking shop, and the minutiae thereof.
As I discussed earlier, one scanner is capable of operating in both continuous and intermittent scanning modalities according to power demand and operational need, selected according to contacts detected, as well as their proximity. Having two scanners mounted to the same ship introduces a new problem, whereby each scanner must share the same power source with the other. Our firmware does account for this use case, and permits interoperability of the scanners, which detect and network with each other to select the optimal scanning protocol, making use of the additional hardware, and disabling redundant systems to reduce energy demands. An intentional connection using the networking ports is preferable, though the scanners are capable of discovering interconnected and nearby equipment by other means. I believe this functionality was developed based on a hypothetical and as a weekend project. Our testing so far has suggested that the application of additional hardware sharing similar power sources does deliver increased sensitivity during long range scans, and increased detail and finesse during thorough lower-range scans. This improvement is however, mild compared to the importance of ensuring optimal power supply to the units. I am glad to hear that you have an adequate computing power to interpolate scan data from both scanners simultaneously. Ensure your processors are appropriately bridged to both scanners in parallel to ensure scan data is not interpreted with integrated hardware.
We are happy to accept your existing scanner as a trade-in and offer a discount on its value against your purchase of two Minified Spyglass Scanners. If it is not suitable for refurbishment, we will repurpose acceptable parts for repairs and analysis depending on the origin of the scanner. Rest assured any retained data will be stored securely and confidentially before being securely destroyed. If it is your intent to venture towards Liberty, Cochrane would indeed be suitable. If you should find yourself nearer Kusari, Leiden would also be perfectly capable of carrying out the modifications to the same standard. We will accept your payment on delivery to reduce any financial risks to yourself or us, in the event of any mishap prior to your arrival. If you are not willing or able to bring your ship to one of our Lane Hacker technology associates, especially depending on the class, size and complement of the Amalfi, we are able to deliver the equipment to a suitable modular outpost of your choosing for a small fee, payment on delivery or in advance.
Do let me know how you would like to proceed and I will ensure to notify the relevant personnel of your intentions and arrival.
