After the First Nomad War, the midst of Rheinland Military and MND were still littered with batches of infected personnel. Even after a significant majority of the Nomads was exiled through the Dyson Hypergate or flat out eradicated, rumors of alien intrusion were still present among the regulars. At the time, the first priority of newfound and re-established legal force was getting rid of this taint upon Rheinland’s history without revealing anything to the public. The majority of soldiers and officers were working to resolve the known issue, hunting down and eradicating all infectees and loyalists that were still able to fight after a tremendous quake that was caused by the separation of the Mindshare. However, the MND Directorate was facing a different issue - the remnants of Niemann’s finest were trying to spark panic among the civilians.
The 44th Division of Marinenachrichtendienst, codename - “Die Nebel”, was founded for this exact purpose. They were one of the first Rapid Response Groups of MND - investigation, eradication and deceit were their primary forte. Working independently from the rest of MND, The structure of Die Nebel consisted of Observers and Eradicators; they also had direct ties to multiple sources of public media. The Observers were on illegal terms within their own state, blending in with the masses and listening to any rumors, from changing commodity prices and upcoming changes in popular media to criminal and paranormal activities in space. Any information gathered by the Observer would be analyzed and utilized by Eradicators - a spec-ops group of specially trained operatives, their task being investigating the source, dispatching anything suspicious and making it look like it was something casual. Their tactics were to send a small group of highly trained operatives as bait first, and once their target would take that bait, they would face the full force of Eradicators, being dispatched with no losses at all.
During the purge, efforts of Die Nebel in suppressing criminals and deserters alike allowed the Rheinland Government to re-establish its complete and total control over the masses, pouring a relieving image into their minds and ears. However, their work was far from finished. Fast forward to modern days, the 44th Division of Marinenachrichtendienst still performs its function as a suppressing gear in Rheinland’s apparatus.
The Tragedy
In 828 A.S, the high command of Die Nebel lost their contact with their primary group of Eradicators as they were exploring rumors of military deserters in the system of Zurich. According to their protocols, a Search and Rescue team would have to be dispatched into their last known location after two weeks of radio silence. Just as the High Command was about to issue a Search and Rescue party, the radio silence was broken. The Eradicators emerged victorious after two weeks of constant battle with deserter elements, coming back home with countless trophies, albeit they all knew that there would be no celebration when they come home. The entire operation was covered up as a joint training exercise between Rheinland Military and Gallic Navy. As for the commander of Eradicators, he earned himself a private audience with the director of Die Nebel - an honorable revard for any agent.
In reality, the Eradicators were ambushed by something way different than simple military deserters. As their initial group was setting up a bait, they were met with significant resistance, enough to make the remaining “fist” to do its part. However, the moment the Eradicators used their force at full, their enemy revealed their true colors. Eradicators’ own tactics were used against them. In mere seconds, their unit was swarmed by alien and human ships alike, each and every ship of Die Nebel was disabled individually, one by one. Their enemy fought with coordination and tenacity unlike anything they have ever faced. Their communication with high command was cut abruptly, their only chances to warn them of what lies in Zurich were reduced to none. And to their own dismay, not a single Eradicator died during that fight. All of them, including their commander and crews of their gunships and cruisers, have shared a fate far worse than death. And with that private audience granted to the commander of Eradicators, so did their director and the rest of Die Nebel.
Their function of observation, eradication and deceit still remains. As vigilant and omnipresent as they were before, Die Nebel is an unspoken guardian of Rheinland’s societal stability. However, their true allegiances lie elsewhere. Every bit of gathered information they relay to their superiors in Rheinland is now a perverted lie, subtle enough to make no difference with reality without knowing the actual truth. The only ones who know the truth apart from Die Nebel agents themselves are their true masters, those who lie in wake on far regions of the Tau systems.
Structure High Command:
The main catalyst of Die Nebel. Every decision, every raid, every news article written - all comes from them.
The Director The one that overlooks all. The Director of Die Nebel is responsible for every action of their agency, they must be aware of what every agent knows and from where every rumor stems. Regarded not for their combat abilities, but for their managing mastermind and absolute devotion, the Director must combine in themselves outstanding strategic, tactical, and deceiving qualities.
The Watchman The head of the Observers, their duty is to gather every bit of information gathered by their subordinates and refer it to the Director. The Watchman is required to have a perfectly strategic mind and flawless understanding of the art of espionage.
The Specter The commander of Eradicators, Specter is a tactical mastermind and a brilliant fighter. For an agent to become a Specter, their service record has to be outstandingly flawless and contain multiple notes of survival against uneven odds.
The Siren All the news that’s fit for your daily peaceful life, the Siren is the one that creates convenient lies and perverts reality into a more appealing shape for the audience. The Siren is required to have a vocabulary second to none, as well as a perfect understanding of the demands of the public.
Agents:
The Observers Masters of psychology and espionage, The Observers blend in with the masses and gather every bit of information and relay it to the Watcher, regardless if they consider it useful or not. Their responsibility is to appear as casual as possible, have their mind focused on their surroundings at all times, and manipulate individuals in the most subtle ways to get a piece of information they require.
The Eradicators Specially trained soldiers and operatives, the Eradicators are the powerhouse of Die Nebel. Every Eradicator follows orders of the Specter, their understanding of subordination has to be equally high as their combat proficiency. In combat, Specters are required to be able to coordinate instinctively, always keeping an eye out not only for their enemies but for their comrades as well.
The Media With a subtle name comes a very deceitful duty. Media Agents are masters of lies, they will make anyone believe anything they sell as truth. With golden tongues and rich vocabularies, they herd the masses in the directions fit for their command and masters. Their duty similar to that of the Observers, Media Agents keep their allegiance to Die Nebel with finely crafted lies.
