So there I was in Castille, on my way to Freeport 5 to meet something of libertonian origin, and sadly not a Liberty Ale. My surprise was big, got to be honest, when an Arbiter-class battleship appeared on scanner. If there was an Outcast in my place, he would've need like 50 lines of orange flavour to recover from the shock, but not a Corsair. Situational awareness kicked in and the inquiry started.
The folly of this captain, Lucian Perez, deserves to end in a big ball of fire for his ship, but I wanna hear him first, and this only out of respect for Leon, and maybe a bit for his hispanic name. Turns out his ship is close to being a floating pile of metal, which would be very appreciated at Tripoli. Los hermanos there are always in need of scraps to turn them into masterfully crafted ships, such as the Praefect. Either way, this encounter will fetch us something. Now it lies on the captain's shoulders how he will be useful to the Empire. After all, free scrap flying at our doorstep is not something we would decline.
Small introductions were concluded, details will be discussed in the Freeport bar.
[30.07.2022 15:11:11] DTR-Havoc: Uhm, this is..interesting
[30.07.2022 15:11:11] Cloaking device off
[30.07.2022 15:11:31] DTR-Havoc: Do explain yourself, and quick.
[30.07.2022 15:11:50] INS-Torment: ?: This is captain Lucian Perez of the battleship Torment.
[30.07.2022 15:12:06] INS-Torment: LP: We're awaiting a contact here
[30.07.2022 15:12:41] DTR-Havoc: A contact you say? Interesting, as I'm awaiting for someone too.
[30.07.2022 15:13:06] INS-Torment: LP: An artifact smuggler perchance? Some Hessian to blow up?
[30.07.2022 15:13:12] INS-Torment: LP: You Corsairs have a bit of a reputation
[30.07.2022 15:13:46] DTR-Havoc: Surprinsingly to you, libertonian, we also do other sort of businesses
[30.07.2022 15:14:39] INS-Torment: LP: Oh I'm sure, Liberty paints a pretty biased picture of everyone they dont agree with, the Insurgency included
[30.07.2022 15:15:39] DTR-Havoc: All houses usually do that. But their version is their truth, not ours.
[30.07.2022 15:16:24] DTR-Havoc: So, with this I guess we have something in common. Which might actually save your life and ship.
[30.07.2022 15:17:06] INS-Torment: LP: Hah, does that mean we wont be swarmed by the Corsair armada while we wait?
[30.07.2022 15:17:32] DTR-Havoc: That depends on you, senor Perez.
[30.07.2022 15:18:00] DTR-Havoc: Tresspassing into Corsair Empire's core system is no small offence.
[30.07.2022 15:18:08] DTR-Havoc: Especially with a ship of that size.
[30.07.2022 15:19:21] INS-Torment: LP: As for tresspassing, desperate times call for desperate actions I suppose, though I was led to believe things had been
[30.07.2022 15:19:23] INS-Torment: arranged
[30.07.2022 15:19:45] INS-Torment: LP: I'll need to have a word with mister Leon about this. I expected more professionalism
[30.07.2022 15:20:08] DTR-Havoc: Leon you say? Stay tranquilla, captain.
[30.07.2022 15:20:47] DTR-Havoc: You were most fortunate. Sneaking up until here and being discovered by the contact you're looking for. Very lucky
[30.07.2022 15:20:58] INS-Torment: LP: Come again?
[30.07.2022 15:21:25] DTR-Havoc: I've been in contact with Leon too.
[30.07.2022 15:22:03] DTR-Havoc: Didn't recieved much details of whom I am gonna meet. Now I see why.
[30.07.2022 15:22:21] INS-Torment: LP: I find that rather surprising to say the least.
[30.07.2022 15:22:38] INS-Torment: LP: I asked for a contact who could help with emergency repairs and maintenance
[30.07.2022 15:23:07] INS-Torment: LP: Isn't a ship like the Torment a bit to, erm, sizeable? For your organization?
[30.07.2022 15:23:23] INS-Torment: LP: No offense, as I mentioned earlier, information on you all is somewhat limited and not particularly flattering
[30.07.2022 15:23:55] DTR-Havoc: If Leon sent you to us, I assume we have the required capabilities.
[30.07.2022 15:24:15] DTR-Havoc: But before this, since you're the person I was waiting for, let me introduce myself too.
[30.07.2022 15:24:50] DTR-Havoc: My name is Matteo "Havoc" de Santis, captain for the Deterrence vessel CNS-Parabellum.
[30.07.2022 15:25:15] DTR-Havoc: Lets proceed to the bar, captain, and talk this more freely.
[30.07.2022 15:25:57] INS-Torment: LP: We could, or you could come onboard
[30.07.2022 15:26:22] DTR-Havoc: *laughs* I'd rather do it on a neutral ground.
[30.07.2022 15:26:28] INS-Torment: LP: We don't have all too many ammenities, given our recent exodus from Liberty.
[30.07.2022 15:26:40] INS-Torment: LP: Hah, a fair point. I suppose those Freeports have a purpose even for Corsairs
[30.07.2022 15:27:04] INS-Torment: LP: Very well, in the bar it is.
[30.07.2022 15:27:21] DTR-Havoc: Freeports have more purposes for us than you know of. But that's a topic for another time.
[30.07.2022 15:27:34] DTR-Havoc: *engages docking procedures and proceeds to the Freeport 5 bar*
[30.07.2022 15:28:01] INS-Torment: LP: I will be there momentarily, needless to say the Torment can't exactly more with a station of this size
[30.07.2022 15:28:04] 2022-07-30 12:28:02 SMT Traffic control alert: INS-Torment has requested to dock
[30.07.2022 15:30:26] 2022-07-30 12:30:24 SMT Traffic control alert: DTR-Havoc has requested to dock
With a small sigh Lucian mentally prepared himself before entering the bar of Freeport 5. The station was a hodgepodge of Corsairs, Zoners, Hessians, even the odd bounty hunter here and there. However, even with such a diverse 'clientele' Lucian could not help but feel like he was sticking out like a sore thumb. In all fairness, his insurgency captains uniform probably did not help matters.
After briefly scanning the room Lucian approached the barkeep and asked about this 'Matteo' he was supposed to meet, purchasing two drinks while he was at it. "You're looking for that 'hombre' over there" the barkeep said, nudging in the direction of a Corsair sitting at the a secluded part of the bar.
Lucian nodded in gratitude before walking up to Matteo, placing one of the two drinks infront of him before taking a seat and said: "I'm pretty sure this is the first time an Insurgency and a Corsair captain walked into the same bar, think they'll write jokes about this meeting in the future?"
All eyes in the bar were pointed at Matteo. There aren't many individuals around who have the guts to pull a joke in front of a Corsair, but Matteo couldn't help it and let a chuckle slip out. "Senor Perez, jokes are a two-edged sword around these parts. Sit, and lets give them something to write history." He checks the drink, pulls out and lights a cigar, and remarks: "This will do."
Normally, an introduction like this wouldn't go as smooth and civilized as this, but Matteo can set his pride aside when diplomacy is required. And after all, what do Corsairs and Insurgency share? A free soul and healthy mind, sick over the top of corruption. In essence they share a similar goal, but on different battlefields. So, this is beneficial for both ends, especially for the Corsairs. Matteo is aware of the leverage he has on captain Perez, that he can't go far away with his ship being highly damaged, and after taking another smoke from the cigar, he says: " Capitán, from our side is bueno."
Leon did indeed provided Deterrence with what was required of them. Rhodes is ready to recieve the Torment. On the other side, I trust that captain's Perez presence here means the Insurgency is also able to provide the Corsairs with what they're looking for. The lenghty and difficult defence of Deterrence Sanctum against the Core and Sniffers cabrons did pointed several things, one of them being the big fuel consumption of the Murmillo class battleship. As of this, Deterrence High Command agreed to launch a research on the matter, but we were missing the lead engineer, until now. Senor Perez is familiarized with Liberty tech and should be able to help us achieve our goal. And after our meeting I'm preety sure he has the will too. The will to help us or the will to stay alive, doesn't really matter, the ending is the same.
The deal was on the table. Clear as sunlight that's a life or death scenario for Perez and the Torment, so Matteo puts out his cigar then looks at him straight into the eyes: "Shall we proceed?"
Lucian listened attentively as Matteo spoke, he wasn't shot yet so that was a good sign at least. All in all the concerns of the Corsairs seemed to be about the fuel efficiency of their capital vessels, specifically that of the 'Murmillo' class, whatever that was. On the positive side, the Corsairs seemed willing to patch up the Torment in return for helping them with their little 'performance issue'. Still, it was clear careful negotiation would be needed: there was little doubt that if the crew of the Torment outlived their usefulness before the repairs were finished, the Corsairs might just capture the crew and strip down the ship for parts instead.
With a big swig of his drink and a satisfied "Aah" escaping his lips, the captain leaned over the table towards Matteo and said: "So, just to make sure we're on the same page here. My Engineers look at your vessels fuel consumption performance and work together with your Engineers to try and see if we can optimize it with Insurgency technology, and in return the Corsairs repair the Torment and provide safe passage through Corsair space, correct?" The deal was good on paper, but asking for assurances would surely risk the ire of his counterpart. For now Lucian observed attentively, curious to see how Matteo would react to the summary he had provided.
Analyzing Lucien's answer it looks like he was surprised that he can get out of this so easy. Maybe he was expecting a hefty amount of credits or other supplies that the Torment couldn't spare in such a dire situation. "Capitán Perez, it's obvious you're gotten it wrong. You're alive, eh? We're businessmen, not terorists. Surely, most of our deals aren't negociated in a bar, but Leon vouched for you.". After another swig of his drink, Lucian breathed a great sign of relief after hearing this. He didn't had the time to put down his glass because Matteo wanted to make himself clear : " But make no mistake.".
Matteo signaled one of his lieutenants sitting at a nearby table to approach. Then looks back at Perez and started to tell the plan of action with the lieutenant listening. The Torment is to proceed to Rhodes Shipyard in Sparta escorted by Matteo's personal ship. Once there, we will find the Parabellum already in the drydock. El capitán and the necessary crew will board Rhodes, meet with the lead engineer in the R&D wing, and will proceed on the task. Rhodes's personel is aware of their task, to reduce the fuel consumption of the Murmillo-class battleship, and the Parabellum will be the first vessel having it's Liberty tech engines retrofited with Insurgency technology. Once the vessel will undock and proceed to flight tests, the Torment will take it's place and recieve the necessary repairs.
After Matteo finished outlining the plan he looks at his lieutenant, which took off in an instant. He then looks back towards Parez and comes:" Don't make me wait." while leaving the table towards the hangar.
It seemed a deal had been struck, even if Lucian wasn't particularly sure if he had actually agreed, but it seemed that his agreement did not play a factor in this matter.
Still, he had gotten what he wanted, at least on paper. Now all that remained was to actually bring it to fruition. Lucian finished his drink before following Matteo out the bar, heading back to the Torment.
Once Lucian was safely back onboard he turned to his staff and instructed the senior staff: "Prepare to head out, we'll be escorted by some Corsair vessels to one of their shipyards. Get the Engineering crew ready, they'll be aiding the Corsairs with a little project while doing the needed repairs. Also, I want explosives rigged at key locations throughout the ship as a safety measure. Should the Corsairs try anything we'll blow the Torment, and their shipyard sky high." The senior staff looked at the captain wearily; the idea of self destructing the ship was far from appealing. Still, given the circumstances, it was a reasonable countermeasure to ensure the Corsairs would stick to their word.
A few minutes after Lucian had landed the Torment entered formation with the Corsair, ready to be led through the dense asteroid fields of the Omega-41 system to it's new temporary home. The Torments crew hard at work with preparing their safety measures.
Of course he kept me waiting. Now more details start to link. No wonder that the Liberty military managed to get so close to their home system. I bet Insurgency captains were still on their way to their vessels while the libertonians were assembled in battle formation at a stone's throw. Alas, I had my cigars with me so I won't complain that much. After three cigars there he was with a new, shiny uniform and a lot of hair spray. Matteo couldn't resist: "Perez, looks like you're prepared for your funeral" . As for the impression, we prefer skill over looks.
Finally, formation was complete, Omicron Gamma's jumphole coords were locked. Another corsair that goes by the callsign "Tortillero" entered formation. We were finally moving, but not at full speed since the Torment being in such a bad shape was very vulnerable to the asteroid fields that cover the whole of Omega-41, and a catastrophic decompression wouldn't serve any interest. Maybe Perez's interest, if he intends to try something folish, be sure his demise will be worse than a flight through space without an escape pod. After all, he has no choice but to comply, so I doubt he didn't took some safety precautions. That shiny uniform inspires honor, so I'm certain he won't just accept his fate if anything goes south.
An eternity and three ice ages later, we were in Sparta. I told Perez to add a new star to that uniform of his, as he was one of the few outsiders allowed in, especially in a vessel as big as his. After exiting Gredos Cloud the Torment was finally able to engage full engine power, and soon enough Rhodes was in sight. Perez was impressed by the size and capabilities of the shipyard, saying they have something similar, but well "hidden". Well, if something has to be hidden in order to remain whole, its defence is pathetic.
After the initial impression of Rhodes tempered down, Perez was able to notice the Parabellum in the drydock. An exterior scan confirmed that the engines are similar to what the Torment has, so his chief engineer will work with familiar technology. Also, Perez mentioned his engineering team was "excited about what they can do". Certainly they're not excited about helping the Corsairs, so that makes me think the task is doable and they have chances of survival. This is why they're excited. I proceeded to dock and await for Perez and his team on board Rhodes so we could head to the R&D wing where the Corsair engineering team was waiting.
On their way Matteo patted Perez on the shoulder: "So, you have crossed the point of no return. How excited are you about this?". At this point, with Perez inside a Corsair instalation and his life being in the hands of his engineering team, the sheep's folly is complete.
[06.08.2022 22:38:15] DTR-Havoc: You're late. I thought I made myself clear about not doing that
[06.08.2022 22:38:43] INS-Torment: LP: Mobilizing a large vessel such as this takes some time, something I'm sure you can appreciate
[06.08.2022 22:39:09] DTR-Havoc: Fine.
[06.08.2022 22:39:16] DTR-Havoc: Alas, let's proceed to Sparta.
[06.08.2022 22:39:19] INS-Torment: LP: Though I must confess, the thought of moving through these asteroid fields is rather daunting
[06.08.2022 22:39:51] INS-Torment: LP: We are ready to follow
[06.08.2022 22:40:18] DTR-Havoc: Roger. Set coords for 6E, the jumphole that leads to Sparta.
[06.08.2022 22:40:28] DTR-Havoc: I'll provide escort and safe passage.
[06.08.2022 22:40:35] INS-Torment: LP: Affirmative
[06.08.2022 22:41:05] DTR-Havoc: 'Ola, senor.
[06.08.2022 22:41:19] Tortillero: 'Ola!
[06.08.2022 22:41:20] DTR-Havoc: Stand down. This one requested clearence.
[06.08.2022 22:41:32] INS-Torment: LP: I can see why you Corsairs enjoy this system. Any attempt of a hostile vessel to try and enter would be completely crippled
[06.08.2022 22:41:43] Tortillero: All fine, I was on my way back to Crete anyway
[06.08.2022 22:42:11] DTR-Havoc: Indeed, Perez. They get stuck and become easy prey.
[06.08.2022 22:42:32] INS-Torment: LP: Scanners are picking up the anomaly
[06.08.2022 22:42:46] DTR-Havoc: There it is.
[06.08.2022 22:42:55] DTR-Havoc: Standby.
[06.08.2022 22:43:00] INS-Torment: LP: Understood
[06.08.2022 22:43:25] DTR-Havoc: While your crew perform pre-jump checks I'll secure the other side. Make sure no ambush will take you down.
[06.08.2022 22:43:31] DTR-Havoc: Going in.
[06.08.2022 22:43:58] DTR-Havoc: Clear to proceed.
[06.08.2022 22:44:32] INS-Torment: LP: Safe skies so far, you Corsairs have a pretty good lock on your space don't you?
[06.08.2022 22:45:13] DTR-Havoc: I thought Leon told you we'll lock O-41 down for this meeting.
[06.08.2022 22:45:33] DTR-Havoc: But you still managed to slip through. Alas, lets resume before I get angry again.
[06.08.2022 22:45:38] INS-Torment: LP: Mister Leon gave very little information. As you might recall, I wasn't even sure who we were meeting
[06.08.2022 22:45:50] INS-Torment: LP: *chuckles* affirmative, lead the way
[06.08.2022 22:46:00] DTR-Havoc: Capitan, this is Sparta, our home system.
[06.08.2022 22:46:10] DTR-Havoc: One of the most deadly systems around.
[06.08.2022 22:46:19] INS-Torment: LP: It uh, seems very cloudy
[06.08.2022 22:46:26] INS-Torment: LP: How big is this nebula?
[06.08.2022 22:46:50] Tortillero: You haven't seen the beauty of its warm, deadly sun yet!
[06.08.2022 22:46:55] DTR-Havoc: It's called the Gredos Cloud. Not that big, but enough to jam enemy sensors.
[06.08.2022 22:47:06] INS-Torment: LP: A unique description of a sun *chuckles*
[06.08.2022 22:47:22] INS-Torment: LP: We noticed, scans are barely picking up anything
[06.08.2022 22:47:27] DTR-Havoc: The unlucky ones who manage to get this far, will fly right into an ambush.
[06.08.2022 22:47:49] DTR-Havoc: Like this cabron here.
[06.08.2022 22:48:08] DTR-Havoc: Seems you like your bounty hunters.
[06.08.2022 22:48:13] Tortillero: Si, his luck ran out here
[06.08.2022 22:48:28] INS-Torment: The Insurgency and bounty hunters have a rather similar relationship to yours, I imagine
[06.08.2022 22:48:47] DTR-Havoc: This will serve you well in our relation.
[06.08.2022 22:49:15] DTR-Havoc: So, Lucian, our destination is Rhodes Shipyard, located at 5F.
[06.08.2022 22:49:18] INS-Torment: LP: At least we're no longer exposed to the radiation of the neutron star, frankly I found being on a station so close to one
[06.08.2022 22:49:25] INS-Torment: LP: To be rather unnerving
[06.08.2022 22:49:35] INS-Torment: LP: Affirmative, initiating cruise engines
[06.08.2022 22:49:45] DTR-Havoc: Entering formation.
[06.08.2022 22:50:40] INS-Torment: LP: Ah, it seems we have left the cloud
[06.08.2022 22:50:58] DTR-Havoc: Si. Our homeworld should be within sensor range now.
[06.08.2022 22:51:02] INS-Torment: LP: Now I see what you meant with that sun
[06.08.2022 22:51:37] DTR-Havoc: We're nearing our destination.
[06.08.2022 22:51:50] Tortillero: Good luck. I will leave you here then.
[06.08.2022 22:52:00] DTR-Havoc: Gracias for el escort, amigo.
[06.08.2022 22:52:07] Tortillero: De nada!
[06.08.2022 22:52:23] INS-Torment: LP: Quite the impressive sight, it rivals Fort Leniex
[06.08.2022 22:52:36] INS-Torment: LP: Hmm, it might even be bigger
[06.08.2022 22:53:10] DTR-Havoc: We could say it's better. It will save your life by repairing your ship.
[06.08.2022 22:53:49] INS-Torment: LP: *chuckles* Fort Leniex is a shipyard of the Insurgency, quite well hidden. It might be the only thing that survives
[06.08.2022 22:53:54] INS-Torment: LP: Liberty's assault
[06.08.2022 22:54:38] DTR-Havoc: Well, hoping it lives because it's hidden doesn't seems right to us.
[06.08.2022 22:55:06] DTR-Havoc: We prefer to deploy overwhelming defences around our critical infrastructure.
[06.08.2022 22:55:11] INS-Torment: LP: Liberty's time to pay will come
[06.08.2022 22:55:46] DTR-Havoc: Deterrence will make sure your ship will be combat effective for the task ahead.
[06.08.2022 22:55:56] INS-Torment: LP: Much appreciated indeed
[06.08.2022 22:58:56] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: Capitan, you might be the first outsider who saw Crete and lived to tell the tale.
[06.08.2022 22:59:21] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: Enjoy this moment. It doesn't happen very often.
[06.08.2022 22:59:38] INS-Torment: LP: Ah? What do the Corsairs consider an Outsider?
[06.08.2022 23:00:15] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: Mostly anyone except Zoners, Order, Hogosha.
[06.08.2022 23:00:43] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: Gaians are also allies, but they're far away.
[06.08.2022 23:01:18] INS-Torment: LP: There's some bad blood between the Insurgency and the Gaians. Turf disputes mostly
[06.08.2022 23:01:50] INS-Torment: LP: So which of these ships is the 'Murmillo' class you spoke about?
[06.08.2022 23:01:54] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: Say that again and we might be obliged to blow you up, as we respect our friends.
[06.08.2022 23:02:18] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: The ship from Drydock no.2. The one on the left.
[06.08.2022 23:02:21] INS-Torment: LP: Pff, would you prefer I keep secrets and lie instead? Last I heard Corsairs take offense to that
[06.08.2022 23:02:34] INS-Torment: LP: Understood, taking the Torment in for a closer look
[06.08.2022 23:03:02] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: Seems any familiar to you, Perez?
[06.08.2022 23:03:16] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: 'Ola, amigo.
[06.08.2022 23:03:29] INS-Torment: LP: Hmm...surprinsingly it seems to have some Libertonian designs to it?
[06.08.2022 23:03:32] DTR-CNS>Barbaros: Mehmet: Salam, my friend.
[06.08.2022 23:04:04] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: Indeed. The initial designs were made by the Liberty Navy.
[06.08.2022 23:04:13] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: I guess you could tell from the shape of the ship.
[06.08.2022 23:04:30] INS-Torment: The engines, mostly. They're very familiar to what the Torment uses after all
[06.08.2022 23:05:14] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: In theory, the Parabellum's engines's design and tech is 29 years old.
[06.08.2022 23:05:22] INS-Torment: LP: If you don't mind me asking, was it captured or built ?
[06.08.2022 23:06:02] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: Our amigos, the Order, offered us the blueprints of their Osiris battleship.
[06.08.2022 23:06:15] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: You can see one over there, the battleship Prox.
[06.08.2022 23:06:58] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: And overtime, we applied several retrofits to the ship. And it resulted in the Murmillo-class you're admiring right now.
[06.08.2022 23:07:19] INS-Torment: LP: Hm, there have been some dealings with the Order in the Insurgency, but none that I ever was involved in
[06.08.2022 23:07:25] INS-Torment: LP: They have a rather secretive reputation
[06.08.2022 23:07:38] INS-Torment: LP: It's surprising to hear they'd share something as significant as a battleship design
[06.08.2022 23:08:09] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: It seems we have more common aquitances. How many aces you've got in your sleeve, Perez?
[06.08.2022 23:08:16] INS-Torment: LP: I see, so the Murmillo is essentially an Osiris with a 'Corsair flare' shall we say?
[06.08.2022 23:09:14] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: I'm glad to see the survival of your crew is the prime concern here. It will serve you well, and you're doing a good job,so far
[06.08.2022 23:09:33] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: To resume, the Murmillo is a better Osiris.
[06.08.2022 23:10:39] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: The Osiris itself is good as well, but it serves a different purpose for the Order.
[06.08.2022 23:11:19] INS-Torment: LP: Well, my Engineers are quite excited to see what they can do about your engines performance at least, now they know it's
[06.08.2022 23:11:27] INS-Torment: LP: originally of Libertonian design
[06.08.2022 23:12:08] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: Si. Trust me it is, we know our ships. But, we specialize in making them more deadly, not fuel efficient.
[06.08.2022 23:14:27] INS-Torment: LP: Very well, no time like the present
[06.08.2022 23:14:46] INS-Torment: LP: I assume preparations are made for my crew to get started?
[06.08.2022 23:15:19] DTR-CNS>Parabellum: Indeed. Make your way to the station. I will greet you and proceed to the R&D room.
[06.08.2022 23:15:57] INS-Torment: LP: Affirmative, see on the station
