I personally, along with Jinx, use Metasequoia. Not sure for the other modellers around though.

I learnt on Gmaz, which is why I included it in the FLPack. However, Metasequioa can be easier to use.

Try out both, think about something you would like to make, and then make the same thing on both programs. Whichever program you prefer, use that one:)

Remember, that I included those two becuase they were relatively small in comparison to most. There are other programs out there like Autodesk and AutoCam etc.

I chose the third option.

3DS Max 2007. <.< >.>

If you aren't familiar with any other software yet, I suggest you look first at the ones many other FL modelers are using. I ended up using Blender3D, which is great, but FL-related support for it isn't easy to come by so I have to figure out most of it for myself.

I have heard very nice things about Metasequoia, most of which runs along the lines of that it's easy to do pretty much anything you want to with it.

Also you could try Wings3D. Possibly the most user friendly modelling program I've used, not the best in terms of actual modelling though.

I've used Gmax and 3ds max, but honestly those are animation tools and Metasequoia seems to be a lot more efficent for what we're making. My only gripe is that exporting it is a real pain, you have to own a license for it, and the only importers I found were for 3ds max ... which you need to also pay for. Saving it as an .x file didn't work for me either...

I'm addicted to Milkshape. Reason is simple. I never made any other models than Freelancer specific ones. Next thing is, you need Milkshape to export the model files in the format Freelancer is using.
There are exporters for Milkshape only afaik. Milkshape license is somewhat around 25 Euro. Dunno exactly how much Dollar.
Yes Milkshape lacks some tools and is a low poly program, but with experience you can move around the missing tools and Freelancer models must have low number of polygons. The advantage of Milkshape is the ability to import most 3d file formats, except gmax files, but from gmax you can always export into 3ds.

I loved GMax. But I am best in 3DSMax/Maya 2009.

I have yet to try the other option. Maybe it will make a noob less noobier.

I'm sorry but you're wonderfully wrong, 3ds Max is not just a tool dedicated to animation. Its a fully functional and very capable modeling suite.

Having used it for years I can atest to its ability to contruct geometry from the simpliest of box modeled objects to high poly spline meshes. its rendering capabilities are also excellent when used in the right hands. It does however cost money and take some time to get the feel for.

My vote goes to Gmax, but as I said I'm biased as a long term 3ds max user.:P
