Not used to forums so sorry if the formatting is wack. Also hope this is the correct spot.
I'm a returning player and I've managed to convince a few friends to join me in rediscovering this game.
We're interested in making a player faction and I've done a bit of research on the forums on how to make that happen and what to avoid and all that but I have a few questions I'm hoping some real veterans can answer for me.
1. Can we just, make a faction? I'm obviously planning on putting up an ideas and feedback post but if I was inclined to skip that step could we just add tags and go or will that get us a talking to?
2. is there any precedent for a "hybrid" faction? As in a merging of two distinct factions. Hypothetical examples being a joint task force comprised of two or more nations militaries or unlawfuls working together without merging like the Farmers Alliance?
3. How much information is needed on a factions information post? I looked through a few, but definitely not all, of the unofficial faction info and feedback posts and the RPA one is currently my inspiration for layout and quality but is that the standard or should I aim for more?
That's all I can think of right now, hopefully some of you have some answers for me and I look forward to interacting with you peeps in game.
Hello and welcome, on a server this old there is always a lot of potential reading good luck. But do not worry unduly, although every community has its characters this one is generally supportive and help.
Probably look at the rules and try not to break them is best step first.
1. Yes, however some background, recruitment thread does help know who you are.
2. In theory no problem but all tagged ships need same ID. This is where some backstory helps.
3. Always aim higher, but matching the general standard helps. If doing something different clearer the better. There may be community input but people tend to only deeply look if wanting to be official.

Yes, you can just make a faction. You don't even need to post anything on the forum. You start having a faction the moment you use a tag together with other people. Having a forum presence just makes it easier to get information about your faction and generally sets it apart from random lolwuts that don't know what tags are used for in the roleplay environment.

As Tunicle says, the only limit is the same ID under one tag, but keep in mind that meta-factions are highly frowned upon. First of all, they take away the diplomacy aspect of two separate factions having naturally grown and resulted in a diplomacy-backed alliance/task force/joint venture, but you also get the nasty image of a character of your faction being essentially able to access information gathered on another faction - possibly resulting in people not wanting to interact with you to avoid giving you any kind of information that could end up in the wrong hands.
When it comes to these things, subtlety and self-restraint are a thousand times better than trying to be overpowered and sneaky.

Ask yourself what you would want to read about other factions when creating that post. You want to be informative, not just throw random pictures from google at the reader. It is generally a good idea to give information on your short- and longterm goals and your intended diplomacy with other factions, as well as the names of one or two important faction-representing characters. Bonus points if your faction limits itself to certain ship types instead of using everything available to the ID.
While it is good to provide lengthy detailed faction backgrounds, keep in mind that it might also be interesting to save long stories for interaction ingame. Key details are nice for the faction page, all the fluff is ideal for talking with characters ingame.
Also, you don't need to create a feedback thread and for your own sake should not allow anyone to use your faction profile page as feedback thread. Feedback threads have never resulted in anything good for anyone's sake. All the feedback you need can be gathered from two sources: Do you break the rules? If not, good. Do people want to interact with you? Yes? Then your faction is alright.
The specifics regarding information on the forums can be found on other faction's pages. You said you have already done this, so that's a good start. I myself had to do the same thing when writing up my own page.
If you do intend on at least setting up an info page, I'd recommend at least putting these chapters / sections in:
- Who you are (Researchers / Pirates / Traders)
- How you were founded (Splinter group from another faction, group of like-minded individuals fighting for a greater cause)
- What do you do (Perform terroristic actions, provide supply services, discuss the construction of missiles)
- Two goals: Immediate and Near / Far Future
Examples from the "Piracy" angle
- Immediate: Steal cargo from tradeships to accrue wealth and resources
- N/FF: Construct a base to maintain ships and launch raids from
Not sure what kind of faction you and your friends intend on playing, but I'd be interested in reading through what you put together.
Thank you all for the quick and informative replies, I am already talking with my friends and we are refining our idea as best we can.

Our intention had never been to be Meta but I definitely understand the concern, thankfully after actually looking at the tech chart the compatibility is 100% so there's a good chance we won't be trying for a hybrid.

This is actually super helpful and I will definitely be referring back to this when I do the write up.
