Sounds freezing up framerate

Well, essentially, every time I turn on sound (3D Sound disabled even), and for example, thrust, or hear several weapons firing, framerate goes down, in timing with each sound.

Is it a problem with my computer, or my installation of Freelancer, or my graphics or sound card?

And am I the only one experiencing this?

I have it too. But my PC is a frankenstein monster and my sound card was manufactured in 1999. I looked up Tech Support online and got the "End of Service Life" message.

I play with sound off, but music and voice on. The only drawback is if I'm in a transport/cap and a bomber fires a SN at me out of my FOV, the only way I know I'm being shot at is if I see it being fired.

No fancy reverse-thrust SN evasion for Rudo.

Same thing here, actually. But, after 4.85 came out, I desperately wanted to hear some sound effects while playing.

Only thing I can tell you in that case, is keep the menu handy for when you need your framerate.

You don't need full smoothness for trading or loitering around typing, do you?

Haha, but after seeing videos of people in combat, I just wanna have that sound just for the extra immersiveness.

Then all I can tell you is figure out what type of PCS slot you have, and go shopping for a new card.

I might do the same, but mostly because I want to play TF2. For that one I'd apparently have to disable my card altogether or it won't be playable.

I wonder if installing Dx9 would help anything...

Right, a little bump, as I feel hopeless and still desire to play with sounds.

Anyone got any ideas?

And no, buying a new sound card is not an option for me.

I only have this problem with Freelancer. Taking a look at my sound card, it seems it's an old ESS Allegro PCI card.

Gonna see if I can update that driver...

And no, none of the above work.
