Biography
Erik grew up, in a stable middle class family, his father had served the Rheinwehr, like his father before him, but was a civilian for the majority of Erik's upbringing. His mother came from a rather modest upbringing and was very quiet and reserved. However with a vicious temper.
Erik did not struggle at school, academically. However he was a quiet and reserved kid and struggled to form deep relationships early on, he seemed to gain friends, but they always seemed to forget him, or exclude him at times. Erik didn't know if this was deliberate, or accidental, but his childish response was to grow ever more suspicious and less trusting of others. This further complicated his ability to form friendships.
His teachers and parents were well aware of his social struggles, however they hoped he would grow out of it, that it was merely a phase in his childhood.
As he grew older, he did show some signs of improvements on the surface, his parents and teachers alike rejoiced and thought he finally was becoming less anti-social. During middle school and later high school he managed to pick up a few friendships, these were indeed true friends, two boys his own age by the name of Heinrich and Björn. And a girl one year younger named Christina. The four of them became inseparable until they became adults. It was during this time he picked up a hobby playing music, seeing as Heinrich also played, Erik took a interest in playing the piano. The two often spent hours together playing songs.
At the age of 18, as the men in his family before him, Erik enrolled into the Rheinland Military academy. Yet his friends, chose a civilian route. Heinrich went to law school, Björn started working in his families farm, and Christina went off to study accounting. For years they kept contact, and met up whenever possible, however as Erik was accepted into the Rheinwehr, and later deployed to various places across the house - and sometimes outside - it was difficult to see each-other regularly. Heinrich later found employment on Planet New Berlin as a paralegal and later as an attorney, whilst Christina moved to Planet Hamburg to work in a corporate office for Imperial Shipping.
Erik, now in his 20s had been moving up the ranks in the Rheinland Military, finally spending less time on the fringes of Rheinland, and more within core house space. After reaching the rank of Leutnant at the age of 21 years, he got to spend more time planet-side at various academies. As the diplomatic relations between Rheinland and Liberty soured, Erik moved up in the ranks, reaching Oberleutnant by the age of 24. At this point, he was moved to planet Hamburg, where he took command over a gunship squadron of 12 ships. Whilst at Planet Hamburg, he reconnected with Christina, the two enjoying spending their time together talking of the old days. Christina had gotten out of a engagement to a middle manager at her workplace. He had been unfaithful, and she was devastated. Her ex had used his influence within the company to have Christina fired. Luckily for Christina, Erik had a spare room she could use, however he insisted it'll be only a temporary solution. Christina on the other hand was too much of a mess. With the firing from Imperial Shipping, she had trouble finding work, and she spiralled into a depression. It was obvious that she needed someone to vent to, but Erik was never much of a emotionally supportive person in that regards. He tried his best, but found it frustrating to listen to the endless complaining. However his military career had taught him to handle a lot of stressful situations, emotional or not.
Christina, however perceived his quiet and stoic approach very helpful, and over time, she confided more and more into Erik, how she felt and what she wanted.
As time went on, the situation between Rheinland and Liberty grew even more tense. Talks of war were frequent and the civilians were ever more uneasy. Christina and Heinrich were growing more and more worried for Erik. Björn however enjoyed the prospect of war, and spoke warmly over the chances to kick Synth Foods out of Rheinland for good.
Björn had grown more and more insular as they had gotten older. Showing few signs of wanting to connect with his old friends. He was constantly complaining about Synth foods this and Synth foods that. Erik knew through his military connections that Björn's family was LWB sympathizers. Their small farm had been heavily affected by the Synth operations on Stuttgart.
As the calendar moved into the year 816 AS, life was routine for Erik. He led his squadron on routine missions into Bering and Hudson. There were constant dangers, criminal activity were flourishing in the wake of the ever more souring relations between Rheinland and Liberty. The federal government had recently published a scathing report, and accused Liberty of conducting Nomad experiments. Tensions surged, Liberty Navy patrols and Rheinwehr patrols were just a measly excuse away from firing upon each-other every day in the border worlds. Erik was wary of the situation, but hid it. Christina was still living with him. It had been a couple of years by now, she had managed to secure a job. However the pay was too low to live anywhere near her workplace, as such she was stuck living with Erik. He thought it was a bit of an annoyance, however Christina showed no sign of wanting anything else. During his time off, she would snuggle up to him on the couch and be very clingy. This was something Erik had no idea how to handle and it was obvious that he was uncomfortable in this situation, so he decided to pick up a new hobby. He settled on woodworking, making small pieces of furniture in the basement of the apartment building. In the meantime whenever they met, Heinrich and Björn would tease them, asking "when are you two getting married" or "have you done it yet". This made Erik even more uncomfortable, yet Christina just smirked playfully.
817 A.S - Liberty declares war on Rheinland.
The die has been cast. Due to war preparations, promotions were put on hold as everyone in the Rheinwehr were focused on perfecting their positions. Officers were hastily dragged to help train a surge of volunteers and rekruts. Erik were in charge of 2 units, teaching them basic combat training. Preparing them for what's to come. His squadron had been dissolved and it's units moved to various fleets. As the unlawful groups in Rheinland had all decided to fight a common enemy - Liberty - thus patrol squadrons weren't needed.
The war raged on, and Erik was moved to the front line. His first few sorties went without a hitch. However as the year progressed, the fighting got more and more intense. Soon, every mission incurred severe losses or injuries. He knew it was only a matter of time before he would meet the same fate. This was no longer a game of chance, but a matter of time. Unsurprisingly, the time came. In December 817 A.S, Erik was on-board a Donau cruiser, serving on the bridge. During battle, a enemy capital ship blew up, the donau had been severely damaged and its shield generators had failed. As the debries showered the donau, a massive piece of metal ripped into the bridge area, crushing parts of it. Erik were hit in his left side by a large chuck, it shattered most of his left arm, broke several of his left side ribs, and flung him across the bridge. Unbeknown to him, a fellow crew-member had managed to drag his unconscious body deeper into the undamaged parts of the ship, and into the rescue pods. As the stricken donau limped back towards safety, the escape pods fired off, sending the few remaining crew towards safety.
Erik woke up 3 weeks later on Planet Hamburg, in a hospital. He has no recollection of what happened that day or until he woke up. His arm had been completely rebuilt with artificial bones and joints. During the operations it was discovered that his left side lounge had been pierced by one of his ribs, complicating things further. It would take the better part of 4 months until he was able to leave the hospital, and another 6 months of physical therapy.
Back at home, he was incredibly thankful for Christina's presence. She helped take care of him, and were instrumental in his recovery. He spent his days reflecting a lot on how he had treated herm but more importantly how he had thought of her. A sense of shame and guilt started brewing, and it took him the better part of a month just to realize how to deal with this. At the same time, he was adamant he wanted back into the front lines, and pleaded with his superiors to let him return. They insisted he finish his physical therapy first, and they would consider it.
In the latter half of 818AS, it was clear this war was not going how the Oberkommando had hoped. Losses were mounting, and Liberty were pushing further into Hudson and Bering, encroaching upon the Hamburg System. Erik still insisted he'd be returned to service, however despite the physical therapy, he was unable to regain full strength and motion of his left hand. His wrist couldn't display full range of motion, as such he was deemed unfit for combat duties. However Erik was steadfast in his determination. His superiors offered him a more administrative task, and gave him the option of going to school and qualify for
Kapitänleutnant, or to resign. Erik was not thrilled of the option to sit back in a command centre somewhere, telling people where to go. However he saw no other options. He went back into officer training for the better part of a year, and successfully ascended to the rank of Kapitänleutnant. He took charge of a intelligence wing that was tasked with collecting signal intelligence, this is how he was introduced to the Büro. Running liaison between the Rheinwehrs intelligence and reconnaissance wing and the Büro's network of intelligence assets. For the next year, he worked alongside Büro agents. This meant he was "home" a lot more. Thus him and Christina spent more time together once again. After some time, they did manage to talk it out, how they felt about each-other, and in the beginning of 820AS, they got married.
Enjoying the time he had together with Christina, and realizing that once the war was over he would likely have to retire from the Rheinwehr as his job would be superfluous, he decided to use his contacts in the Büro, to land a job in signal intelligence. In July 820AS, he was accepted into the Büro, and began his new career.
