Allow Gunboats to pirate, but take their Cruise Disrupter off. First; That stops the stupidly-overused GB spam we've gotten recently, because they will no longer be able to CD their targets. Second; Stops them from being used to solo pirate. If they want to pirate, they've gotta take a fighter or bomber along with it to stop the transport from getting away easily.

Hmm, interesting idea, it would force teamwork in piracy, stop Navy gunboat spam against fighters...
It would make Gunboats more of a combat support role rather then a battle capital ship.
Unfortunately, this stil leaves the problem of "OO! LPI! BLUEMESSAGE KEEL!"
Yes, I am biased. I do think it would be nice to cut down on the gunboat spam...Might even get some of the Navy to dust of a fighter or two I'm certain they must have lying around somewhere. (Speaking about indies more than [LN])

Being as I have not been here long, nor have I piloted a gunboat, I am not sure as the the impact of my opinion, but I'll give it anyway.
An active member has to start somewhere.
Anyway, I agree completely with Dab. I think anything that promotes teamwork is a good thing. In my relatively short travels, I have seen huge amounts of overly powerful pirates. I rarely see them chased off by lawfuls, or challenged. I think this would add an element to being a pirate. I currently am building one character that will be either a member, or an ally of the Lane Hackers. I will pirate, so note that this would effect me as well.
Strip their Cruise Disruptor. I'm sure that this would also effect other parts of the game as well, best we discuss that as well. Given my limited experience with that aspect of Freelancer, I'll leave that to you and learn.
I think dismounting their CD is the way to go, the amount of Gunboats being used has reached epic proportions. It's pretty annoying to log into your lawful fighter to find 3 Gunboats pirating 25k from Manhattan all the time. Take the CD off and you have a mixed wing, which is what we would all like to see.

Removing CDs from all capships would actually be quite sensible. It gives fighters a distinct role, for one thing, and gets away from any comments about cruisers and transports that randomly pop up. I even wonder about changing bombers to dual torpedo instead of dual torpedo/CD, though that may be taking it a bit far.
If anything, GB pirates DO encourage teamwork. The trader has to get off his lazy ass and hire an escort, instead of having the pirate's meager earnings be cut in half.
A transport with a bomber escort can easily down a GB, if not just escape from it.
But really, I still wonder why not many people pirate in a P-Trans... It pretty much rapes most transports, it just requires a bit of cunning to use;)

A Bomber pilot also encourages a transport to hire an escort. GB has nothing to do with that issue. And if it did, then why do we see the majority of traders go around unprotected?
