While having an ingame chat with another player, I got an idea: What if we did away with the BC and the current destroyer?
Instead the BH would have a destroyer/cruiser that would have 10 - 12 turrets and a larger power core. Size and maneuverability stats would be between the current BC and dessie models.
The reasons behind this suggestion:
1)The current dessie is rather... limited... in what it can do. With and without escorts.
2)The current BC is very good at taking out larger caps, and weaker in all other departments.
3)A more flexible ship design would enhance game play. Without it being a "Swiss Army knife".
I was left with the impression that the Core Dissies is currently a very flexible , hard to hit and hard punching ship. With it's small size and maneuverability , it's the only ship which even remotely made me think about a BHG character.
About the current BC - All I can say is that one of those ships , left my Osiris with only 40% hull left / no regens /. It's good , at what it is supposed to do.

The dessie is hard to hit, due to above-average agility (with the notable exception of the vertical agility - it's rather unimpressive) and its thin profile. But it's no hard hitter, believe me. It's a small destroyer with all the advantages and disadvantages. It is not terribly flexible - due to its power core and hardpoint limitations. The BH cap ships do one job fairly well, at the expense of all others. Of course, all ship lines with their different ship classes are like this - no one should have a ship that is powerful in all aspects, excelling in every task. But the BH line has taken it to an extreme.
The BC, however, as you pointed out, is definitely a hard hitter. The thing is, we already have a cap ship to deal with the Osiris, the Nomad BS and the Corsair Dreadnought - the BS.
*wonders what hardpoint limitations he's talking about*
Hardpoint limitations, as in there are only eight of them. Sure, 8 fire backwards as well, and that can be handy. However, you're faced with two definite, workable options with the dessie: anti-cap (probably the best) and anti-bomber (doable, but not without problems). There aren't any extra hardpoints for a couple of solarus turrets, for example. A typical dessie kit has 6-5 turrets, 1-2 pulse cannons and 1 light mortar. Putting even one solarus turret on it (which doesn't make much sense) reduces your efficacy versus other cap ships considerably.
However, the hardpoint situation on the dessie isn't the biggest problem. Maybe it's not really a problem at all. But the power core is, for the lack of a better term, gutless. If the power core were to be increased to allow for the firing of 2 light mortars, you wouldn't even need the BC any more.

Look guys. I realize the BH has a reputation. Even I perceive this. Many players (and I suspect devs) don't like the BH. And that attitude shows up in game and in threads like this. Such is life. But on to the subject at hand.
In my opinion, a flexible/versatile ship is not a ship you can go around and expect to pwn everything that comes your way, with 12 turrets firing in 360 degree arcs and an infinite power core. It's a ship that can respond to a wider range of threats.
The BH Core operate in a very hostile environment. We run up against the Order, the Corsairs and the Nomads. All these factions have ships that pack some serious heat and have technical abilities that surpass the Guild's by a fair degree. To offset some of their opponents' advantages, the BH could have a more flexible destroyer. And, at the same time, the BC could be put out to pasture.

What exactly do you mean by "flexible"? I think it was clearly stated that the Destroyer is flexible enough as it is. It takes down the Order cruiser , easily. It's small and fast enough to avoid the larger ships and it's probably hard to down one with 2/3 bombers.
