I wanted to start writing a Story for my new Zoner Explorer soon. Well the Pilot is a Rheinlander, mainly talking german and using a translator. Also using this in-game.

Lisa: <German Text here> Translation Com: <English Text here>

And i wanted to do it kinda like that for the story.

Is it okay writing something like that in the forum and on the server?

I think it's technically against the rules, but I doubt anyone would care anyway.
What does bother me, is the fact that Rheinlanders don't speak German (except for a few words), so someone who only speaks German and has to resort to a translator to be able to express herself in English is quite a stretch. Except off course if she had been raised in German only, but it would take some quite irresponsible parents to raise someone in a semi-dead language.

Well its kinda odd in my opinion that whole Sirius is talking one Language. Why did Kusari Stop using their own language? And so Rheinland and the Outcasts.

I strongly advise you against doing this.

That's an interesting point. I imagine they didn't (albeit the languages of Sirius in 817 are also unable to be understood by the present speakers of the associated languages and vice versa).

So the situation is probably that everyone speaks a particular lingua franca that is "translated" into English for the game, or they have various translator devices, like you're mentioning. For the latter, I think it would be much more straight forward to just skip ahead to the "Translation Com: <English Text here>" part, as it'd be easier to not broadcast both parts over system comms.

If you are intent on using German for tidbits, include the translation in parenthesis so everyone knows what you mean anyway. So, I'd say something like:

"Heb deine Handy auf!" (Hold up your hand-held radio!)

Just so it's clear to everyone.

Or do as I do on my IMG... mix up the german and english words.. the ones that sound similar and have the same meaning.

From what I recall from sp characters, they do speak english, but for example, rheinlander soldiers tend to have heavy accent. Like they arent used to speaking english. Also, Tobias speaks english with british accent while Trent who is also bretonian speaks without any accents.

So it might be that nations still use their native languages(look at the dockign bays and bars in kusari, they have kanji all over them, as opposed to english on bretonian and liberty planets) but you either have a translator (that being very wierd because it would only work in space, probably) or english is set as "standard" so everyone speaks it a bit.

Please keep in mind there are a lot of young German players around who can easily misinterpret such 'translation RP' and start chatting in German only.

I have that problem occasionally when roleplaying as RM in our 'Rheinlandish' chatter.

Use only a few phrases like 'Guten Tag', 'Mein Herr' or 'Verstanden' but stick to english as common server language.

It is "Heb' Dein Handy auf." in german and "Pick up your mobile." in english
