I got Vista a couple of weeks ago, but only yesterday did I think about installing Freelancer again.
Only problem is that when I try to connect to the server, I keep getting the "connection could not be established" error.
First I though it was my firewall (Vista's own, haven't bothered finding a substitute yet) blocking it, and sure enough it was blocking it asking if I wanted to unblock it. Unblocking it didn't help though...
Turning the firewall off didn't do anything either.
Reinstalling Freelancer didn't help either. Nor reinstalling the mod or the Freelancer mod manager.
Anybody else got the same issue? Maybe a solution or suggestion?
Apart from reinstalling XP again that is.:P

Try connecting via IP address. There is a tutorial of how to set that up so you can connect through the LAN screen, somewhere on the forums. Its a sticky I think.
The solution:
Format PC and install XP pro.
Vista sucks. Its too heavy for most computers. It's just an eyecandy OS, not a good OS.
Maybe in a few years, when Vista drivers are mature enough, bugs are patched and there are plenty of DX10 and OpenGL3 games, vista might be worthy. but that time is not now.

Vista works just fine, only had one other game not working, and that was because ATI hadn't made proper OpenGL drivers yet. Luckily they've made some now.
The XP 64-bit edition, now that's an annoying OS. Lots of software won't run on it, bloody hard finding a free firewall, and let's not talk about old Starforce games, shall we?
Anyhoo, if you want to talk about bad OS' then lets talk about Linux. And Macs for that matter.;)
Back on topic (this isn't a "bash random-OS thread"):
Freelancer works fine in singleplayer, it's only when I try to connect to a server it won't work. So it's most likely some small setting that I haven't found in Vista that's annoying it.

I'm afraid this is not a solution.
We all know that Microsoft wants everone to transfer during the next year. So we'll have to deal with this issue somehow, I'll try to search TLR for any info available.
I didn't try Vista, but I agree with Wolfpack for DirectX 10 alone. Making Dx10 unable to run on Windows XP was one of the most idiotic things Microsoft has ever done. I honestly hope that either hackers will find a way to install Dx10 on XP somehow, or game developers will make games compatible with both DirectX 9 and 10.
Yes. The IP is correct.
I haven't tested the RTM version of Vista yet. Only the Beta 2. So i can't tell you where the problem lies. But it has to be something with firewall, router, or app permissions.
