Thank you everyone for your help! My problem was indeed AVG anti-virus. Disabling it did not work. So I completely uninstalled it and I am able to connect.
Many thanks to everyone for thier help!! Look me up around Philly Station!!

====================================
Hello all! I am experiencing a problem when trying to connect to any of the discovery servers. I have been through this forum sub but have not seen any solution, tho I have seen some tips but not a link to anywhere that explains whats up.
I am running Vista.. I see there are issues with it but cant find what they are to see if that will help me.
I am running AVG antivirus.. same thing as above.
Heres the issue.. maybe someone can tell me if its related to vista or AVG..
My machine is all set to go. Everything is updated and works.
I go to multiplayer and I can see the 4 or 5 different servers.
When I select a server (any of them) and click CONNECT I recieve a pop up window in game that says the following:
I'm sorry but a connection could not be established to that game server. This is usually caused by a server going offline when you tried to connect to it. It may also be caused by internet problems. Please try again later.
The message pops up almost instantly upon clicking connect, which leads me to believe it is not even TRYING to connect.
None of the serves dissappear like they went offline.
There are no problems with my internet connection that I am aware of. Everything seems to be working ok.
Windows firewall and defender are turned OFF.
AVG is ON but I have tried it OFF and no success there either.
I have no problems in any other game with connection issues.
Can anyone help me out? I was so excited to find this site and mod and now I'm like .. deflated =( Please help me get this to work!!
Thanks!
Lord Tarl
EDIT:
Ok.. here are some screenshots..
First you will see the login in screen. it shows 4 servers. Please not that only 1 is anywhere near full
Now on the second one you can see in the background that i am logging into the one with only 28 out of 100 slots full. And in the for ground is the message I am recieving. This message pops up INSTANTLY. It does not even try to connect to a server. It does not take time to time out or anything. It just immediatly spits up the error and doesnt do anything else.
All the help is greatly appriciated! So far nothign has worked. I will be trying to remove AVG and such later on tonight. But I am still looking for other ideas!
Heh,ok,first of all scan your PC for possible viruses or spywares, they can interrupt connection. At least they were making problems for my connection to Discovery.
If you have router, try finding his firewall and turning it off.It can also block connection sometimes.

I work as a programmer and know my way around a system and so far as I can see there is nothing out of the ordinary.
No virus or spyware etc. Running newest version of AVG, Spybot S&D and a few other smaller intrusion preventers.. nada detected. I have disabled AVG as well to see if that was causing an issue and I still had the same problem.
Same thing with the router. It looks to be set up fine. Just to be sure I took the router out of the equation and plugged the machine directly into the cable modem and it still wouldn't work.
=(
I don't think its the machine. It has to be something with the game.. something that's causing a conflict somewhere but I can't figure out what it is. =( I have no other connection issues with anything else except this.. and it happens so quickly its like its not even trying. Usually with a connection issue that says its from an interruption of the internet it takes a little bit to come up as the connection has to time out. This is not doing that. As soon as i click the button it spits up the error. No time delay, no hard drive activity, no sense that its doing anything at all.
Tarl.
PS - I hate my luck. I find this cool thing and cant get the simplest part to work. Good luck for me is stepping in dog crap in my bad shoes.

So you're a programmer eh? Sure thing... I can see that from your post... Go study Networking friend...
The problem is on the servers side... It may depend on your ISP a bit, but mostly upon the server load... If the server is almost full, and you try to connect your socket may be refused by server, because there already is max connections opened... You just have to try again, and again, and again, and finally... BANG... You're in -,-
Its probably your AVG. It was on the blacklist for FL running on a Vista machines until Tic ( my hero) figured out a way to make it work. Basicaly, uninstall AVG then reinstall but this time click on *custom install* and make sure only things marked *free version* are ticked, leave the rest and that lets you go online with Vista and FL. There is a thread somewhere here but im at work at the mo.
Hope that helps bud.
I am using AVG with Vista, and it's true I'm experiencing trouble connecting, but it only happens when server is almost full like 197/200... If the server is less than 190 it NEVER happened O-o So it's not an issue with AVG

I've got the same thing, and thats what happens
I've seen that happen to. But I try to connect to every server and its the same message. Whether it has 3 people out of a hundred on it or 90.
See the thing is.. its not trying to connect. Its going thru the motions but its not really. Something is telling FL that I have no net connection, or completely blocking it etc. I really don't think its server side as I have my doubts its even getting that far.
lol as for the learn networking thing.. that is something I'm working on. My original diploma was in client server programming via C, C++, VB and Vis C / java. While I can code for it, I really don't know my way around a network 100%. Its like cars. I may know how to drive one but that doesn't mean i can fix one heh heh There are lots of areas for computer science. You can work in desktop support and not know how to code. You can know how to code and not know networking. You can work in network services and not know end user support. So yes, I know my way around a system. I'm far from a noob, but I am also not a super pc god. I only meant my comment about being a programmer to help people understand that I have tried all the basic stuff and this is something that is either an advanced problem or beyond my knowledge base. Thats all heh heh
