I got a plan to rebalance the game a bit. Ok, one of the stars in the system goes nova and
fills the system with a planetary nebula
Destroys most of the objects in the system
This system would be picked at random from a hat and it goes bye-bye.
k, consider the system omicron gamma. Omicron gamma is the vital link in the primary artifact trade. Omicron gamma gone == having to smuggle artifacts from bretonia to liberty.
now consider alaska, without alaska the order would need to devise a new route to liberty, a much riskier one.
In a role play environment it can affect...
1. trade routes
2. how powerful a faction is
3. travel in general
4. ability to get certain equipment easily
So if new york went up in flames you would have to take the long way from colorado to california.
*ABOUT STARS GOING NOVA RANDOMLY: With all the issues in freelancer related to scale such as the distance issue and that the going faster than speed of light doesn't match the proportional distance change of an object means we dont care about physics.
Stars don't just randomly go nova all of a sudden.
The only system with a star even close to going nova would be Omega-11.
Not to mention that if a star goes nova, you can pretty much say goodbye to the jumpgates in the system, and likely the jumpholes as well.
What you are proposing is the deletion of an entire system from the mod, and in my opinion, that's a terrible idea.

Anyways, how is this "rebalancing"? What's the purpose of this?

it might be cooler, but you have to take into account the more wide reaching affects of toasting an entire stare system. Like how would a super nova affect the jumphole and tradelane systems, how would it affect all the factions in the system and its neibours

There's way, WAY more to consider than simply 'Oh great, now I have to fly farther'. Lets go along with your example of New York. New York is the Capital system of Liberty. If that system goes buhbye suddenly, I predict a very, very swift collapse of the entire Liberty house.
From a non-RP point of view as well, you have just erased one of the most recognizable and populated systems off the face of Sirius. There are going to be no end to the complaints from doing that.

If we don't care about physics, then why don't we just strap guns and engines onto Planet Manhattan and turn it into a ship?(And yes, I actually tried this a while back for fun. Worst. Ship. Ever.)
