I disagree. Cannonballs may be useless in such a case, but firstalkers and sidewinders work wonders.
Anyway... I happen to like slower firing weaponry myself. I'd recommend four good 2.00 codies with decent energy usage, with either two cannonballs or firestalkers and an MR (Beware, people will call you a missile whore, but so long as you don't spam them every pass I think you're fine). But if you don't want to use codies, I'd go with 5 hellflurries, MR, and sidewinder. Oh, and Nuclear mines, of course.
5x Hellfurys
1x Hellfury Turret
1x Cannonball (Firestalker tracks better, but doesn't do much damage at all, same for Sidewinder)
1x TCD (You could use Inferno, Sunslayer, or Mini-Razor here if you want, I just always use TCDs on my fighters)
1x Screamer Mine (Nuclear if you have an inferno)
The reason I say go with a screamer instead of nuclear mine is because with 5 Hellfurys and a Cannonball, you have a lot of hull-damaging firepower already. You're also more likely to hit in a joust with a missile than a mine. The Screamers will help drop heavy shields like transports and gunboats. With this loadout you can solo-kill a GB, as long as it doesn't have too strong an armor, and as long as you start with 70 Screamers. Of course, if you're using an Inferno, you don't need Screamers and can put a nuclear mine on.

Wouldn't be a joke to Xenos.. Back in .84, our weapons chugged almost as much energy as Archangels, but some of us still went with 6 Blackwidows, meaning 3 shots and you're out of energy on an Eagle.
