I think it should stay at 8500 i know that my decision for a "fun" money setup caught on but it doesn't work for good RP. Everyone should work they way up. Plus if you up it you get people like master chief cheating the system and making tons of characters just to feed one of them.
The starting 8,500 functions nicely, and it forces the player to either A) trade or B) bounty hunt before (s)he can go about and do one of the following: pirating, freighting, bounty hunting, mercenary work, military patrol. On my first character, I traded for a long while, and I was able to buy a whale and expand, gaining more and more each time.
Then, out of the blue, I got recruited by the KNT and given 36 million to buy and furnish a large train.
Harlequinn is right. Sure...trading and mining can get REALLY boring...but if you want to just start off as a REAL freelancer, then it's the only way to go.
Besides, there are much much more "fun" opportunities other than just going around shooting people.
And Asymptotic...have you taken RP lessons yet? ;) No offense intended, but if you haven't you should check it out. It really gets people to appreciate RP.
I think Yngen opened up a "school"(thread) for it.

Johnny_Haas: why you shoot criuse speed rockets?
The starting creds should be maybe upped to 10,000 just so people can get a Rhino quickly and get trading or get their Starflier outfitted fully and pwn Rogues...
I think it should be something reasonable, like 1m. The act of making new characters to get extra money is against the rules anyways; just because a few people abuse high starting money doesn't mean we can't ban them and move on with it still raised.
I can't stand starting in a freakin' Starflier. There's a fine line between starting from scratch and having to chase around enemies who are also in Starfliers, but are jumping around like crazy, I think the term you coined was very good:
"Admiral Simon Walker Wrote:"gazelling"
I don't mind starting with a small amount of money, but I cannot kill anything with a Starflier due to inevitable server-client lagtime. At least 1m would be *fair.*
That's a tad bit high. TankTarget's 10,000 credits makes more sense, but 1 million? That would be, to borrow the accent of my Southern neighbors, plum ridiculous!
If you can't kill the other Starflyers, then don't fight the other Starflyers. Gain money through, ElGatoDiablo said, mining or trading. But by sanctioning cheating, which this would undoubtedly be classified as, we would undo ourselves. People would abuse this, and we could either: A) ban them all or B) remove the source of corruption.
Harlequinn: let me propose an anecdote. In society, all human nature is corrupt and evil, so do we incarcerate criminals or lobotomize everyone's desiring instinct at birth?
.5m would seem more fair... as least one could buy a trading vessel.
