Don't know why. And please don't go saying my speakers are not plugged in, I'm not THAT stupid.
Everything else besides Freelancer has sounds.

For what it's worth, I have never had good sound performance on my PC. By that, I mean the sounds are very erratic. Sometimes they completely disappear, sometimes they work. Sometimes only certain sounds work, then they may get interrupted by, for example, entering a trade lane or docking, or NPC chat. It is probably a combination of an old-ish PC, running Win2000. I have updated my drivers etc. but still cannot get reliable sound effects.

The only thing I've found that *sometimes* (rarely) helps is to go to the Audio config screen and adjust the volume sliders, save and then resume the game.

Due to this, I have never been able to use audio cues during combat, like the sound of a particular missile being fired etc... :/

Sorry I have no definitive answer, but I suspect you should give more info about your system and the exact fault if you want some of the clever people here to advise you - good luck:)

I got the same issue, can only hear gunshots now, LITERALLY nothing else, and it's irritating. I want my sound back without reinstalling.

Well, apart from that, I can't help you, due to major concussion due to being beaten with a stick.

Perhaps beating your computer with a stick will do more good than beating me:P

Seriously, apart form reinstalling, I have no idea.

Try to play with sound hardware acceleration sometimes it help...(Check if you havnt delete \Freelancer\DATA\AUDIO\SOUNDS:P)
Update your soundcard driver.
... Turn off 3d sound in options -> Audio.

Tryed to delete sounds? Or just turn the volume off in options? About this "crazy loud" you can delete it in the sound directory \DATA\AUDIO\SOUNDS (this sound shold be in Engines folder as I remember(probably called "blablabla-loop) Just found it and delete it:P)
