For what it's worth, I have never had good sound performance on my PC. By that, I mean the sounds are very erratic. Sometimes they completely disappear, sometimes they work. Sometimes only certain sounds work, then they may get interrupted by, for example, entering a trade lane or docking, or NPC chat. It is probably a combination of an old-ish PC, running Win2000. I have updated my drivers etc. but still cannot get reliable sound effects.
The only thing I've found that *sometimes* (rarely) helps is to go to the Audio config screen and adjust the volume sliders, save and then resume the game.
Due to this, I have never been able to use audio cues during combat, like the sound of a particular missile being fired etc... :/
Sorry I have no definitive answer, but I suspect you should give more info about your system and the exact fault if you want some of the clever people here to advise you - good luck:)
Well i want to get rid of the sounds.. they are annoying when you on VOIP prog talking to people and all of a sudden the volume jumps up when you tab back in..

Tryed to delete sounds? Or just turn the volume off in options? About this "crazy loud" you can delete it in the sound directory \DATA\AUDIO\SOUNDS (this sound shold be in Engines folder as I remember(probably called "blablabla-loop) Just found it and delete it:P)
