Trial and error reveals the latest version of Milkshape, 1.8.x isn't compatible with the FL import filter. Luckily I found a copy of 1.7 and got the filter to work, at least some of the time.

I was trying to import the Rheinland Battleship, or at least pieces of it if that had too many polys (which it does at max LOD - stoopid Milkshape) but although the points are imported the vertexes are scrambled and and the result is a spiky ball of wool. Any ideas? I've checked Lancers Reactor and they have the player ships in Milkshape but not other objects. The import filter hasn't been in development since about 2003 (not even the author actually has a compiled version of it on his website).

Was thinking about the Junker cap ship proposal - being made out of various other ships and pieces of other ships welded together - a big ugly ball of metal. Would prefer to get some actual models to cannibalise rather than spending time making replicas. Maybe making it out of bits of fighters and small freighters will work out.:)

Stay tuned. (If Vaporlinx or Legeonation beat me too it, well done and good luck to them!)

I found Milkshape 1.8 to be completely worthless. All the program would do would crash while trying to import FBX files from another program. I've resorted to using 1.7.10 which works perfectly. Though I would not recmond using Milkshape to develop ship models (ugly and confusing) controls. As for importing and exporting models check out lancer's reactor for the files they're up there and fully working. Another file that you should look into getting is HARDCMP which will allow you to view all the shipmodels.

When exporting you need 2x files. CMP model file and MAT texture file. I would also highly recemond using the Nvidia file plugin rather than using Targa files for ship textures.

Thanks for the info. Eventually found version 1.7 which I used to grab various models with the FL CMP import filter. Exporting should be interesting...:)I use 3D studio for modelling.
