I have just installed and activated the Discovery mod. When I entered Multiplayer Internet to find the server I was looking for, nothing appeared, although the connection message said connecting. It never did. I uninstalled FL and FLMM and retried, but that didn't help. Any ideas?

Yes, the global server might be down or your firewall/router might be blocking Freelancer.
For the Global server down, try connecting through xfire (www.xfire.com) or modify your Freelancer shortcut to contain the two oficial servers:
