This is an idea I've had for a while... Technically it'd be a way for a few RL friends and I to participate in some group-RP while still remaining independent with just ourselves in a group. We'd be using the Independent Trader ID, and possibly a freelancer IFF? (I'm not too sure which IFF would work for ind. traders most.).

Here's what I'm wondering though --- With the new update, Independent Traders can no longer use Gunboat-Class ships. Would it still be possible to say, have one member of our group of 4-5 use a Libertonian Gunboat with the other's in Transports? or is the idea of an independent trader in a gunboat completely and totally closed off now? Just wanting to know if this would be allowable, because it sounds like a really neat idea.

Can't use the GB on an independent Trader ID, you'd have to use a different ID that allows it.

My advice; Get two fighters for escorts. Two fighters can stop a bomber, and a pirate fighter won't be able to take out a transport with Mk VIII armor before it reaches a base, unless there is more than one. And pirate GBs are weak to the new Transport turrets.

Good idea.
Your terminology, actually, made me think back to Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.

Ah, anyways.
You can use gunboats with the Freelancer ID, if I recall correctly. Dab's posting, and he might have already posted with a much more knowledgeable answer by the time this post is posted, or it might be a little bit after mine. Maybe I'll edit this post once I hit "add reply."

EDIT: You also might not want to use Liberty vessels, as you couldn't go into Rheinland with them.

Freelancer ID still allows gunboats I think - use that instead?

If you do, stick to civilian and/or things like IMG, GMG and zoner ships. They tend to be somewhat-neutral, although civilian is generally the way to go.

A-hah! I just checked in game, and you can, in fact use gunboats with a freelance ID! This solves all of our problems, thanks.:)
