the harvesters look like that cause specifications were layed down.
they are meant to be precursers of the nomads. - early experiments when the creators were not attempting fully biological entities but went cybernetic. - that is why they resemble the fish/sperms so much. - cause the nomads in their final state also resemble them a little - long, cylindrical shapes.
always keep in mind that those ships were made for the harvesters, based on their ideas, their lore. they are not just common AI ships. ( like just any von Neumann drone or Berserker drone )
AIs ( that means - automated ships or unmanned ships ) are NOT meant to use those ships. - a faction outfitting a ship with a powerful AI would use THEIR designs. harvester ships are precursers, ancient relics ( sort of failed relics ) of the nomad ships. - deactivated.... test subjects on the path to a fully organic race.
a "real" von Neumann drone would probably look like either a vaguely spherical pile of "stuff" ( a bit like the voyager drone in star trek, the movie ) where it accumulates things around itself more and more.... ) or like a "Dune" ( frank herbert ) guild jumpship ( which is basicly only a tube ) - or a borg cube.
they would use simplest designs, as efficient as possible. - humans however ( or for what one assumes non AIs ) put emotions into their designs. - looks are at least a little important.
I'll complain about something different. I don't see how this thing is Battleship-sized. I mean, to me it looks about the size of the Collector. It has no distinguishing features about it that identify it as a capital ship. It could be anything, even some kind of new torpedo. The possibilities are limitless! I'm all for innovation, but where does Battleship enter this equation? I mean, I COULD take a Sabre and scale it up so it's half a kilometer long and call it an Outcast Cruiser, but that would be a bit tacky (and very funny, but that's a different matter). Seems like this is having that problem.

Thats what I thought it should be able to look like. Nothing with designs. But more slim and armor plates around it, like Lunaphase stated.
However, on searching for the ships you mention from the movies, it is showing whole bunch of stupidity. Though, I see what you mean.
It's always nice to see someone working on the AI Core vessels, though we have yet even to see the GB already made make its appearence. So I'm sure it'll be alongwhile til the BS makes it way in.
And of course we are still waiting on an answer for:
It appears to be a head with 3 things coming out to make it properly shaped for a "battleship". Needs work. Head is decent, but it needs to be attached to more than glorified streamers. Add a freakishly huge powerplant. Giant smily face. Launch tubes for fighters. Crazy engine. Anything. But put something behind the head and have the streamers "protect" that rather than just keeping someone from entering its personal space (although I'm sure its very sensitive:P) and adding hitbox material.
A new update has been inplemented - Do you agree on what you see?
(Yes/No)
(Your answers will be upon the creator opinion on moving on with the ship modeling experience or it's modeling experience itself. Be wise on your share.)
When you do so, please note the level of detail on the model of the Liberty Dreadnought when compared to this battleship. It's quite intricate, and gives the ship a feeling of scale.
That's what a battleship should be like.
This battleship especially, as it's a "robot" battleship. (I know that's actually incorrect, but you understand what I'm saying.) If any battleships deserve geometric complexity comparable to that of the Liberty Dreadnought, it would be this one.
