[font=Tahoma]Years ago I played a precursor game to Freelancer called Privateer 2 (which of course was preceded by Privateer, go figure). They had the same kind of hunt/kill missions as are found in FL. But in addition they had cargo missions. These were often just pick up a cargo at the current base and take to another, but you could also find more under-the-counter missions for the more adventurous. These often included taking risky cargo to a distant base and required running a police gauntlet or as could be applied in FL another faction which doesn't particularly want that cargo to reach it destination.
It was also possible to hire yourself out as a merc to escort a shipment or to hire a merc to escort yours.
What I'm asking is whether or not Discovery has considered or will consider a more dynamic trading system as part of a future mod?
I know killing another dozen ships is fun, but so is making 3 mil with a cargo that you thought you were only gonna make 600 k.:)
Play regular FL. It's not in the engine code to ferry or play courier and transport cargo. Sorry...
Microsoft hasn't released the source code for FL, so that's just gonna have to be that way.
I am a long-absent Supreme Commander, Executive Commander, Grand Admiral, Fleet Admiral, and Captain in the mighty Hellfire Legion. I have returned, and am on an urgent mission from Drake Thastus to return the Legion to its former glory, and to claim the galaxy for its own. Only then will I be able to rest.
RP Story (Still deciding whether or not to finish)
Actually flyer, I'd disagree, I would've thought that the code is there. Look at the first mission in Vanilla FL, escort a shipment from New York to Pittsburgh,
I know that it's a scripted mission, but the framework for it is definitely there. I reckon with enough tweaking it could be done. Although I'm not sure on the reward for the said mission.
Hmmmm, unfortunately having cargo missions is not possible at this moment due to the codes. Tortured Soul here has a good idea but I am pretty sure that the codes can not be changed from the ones in the single player campaign. Even if you could take them out, the coding of the game does not allow you to put new missions into the bars to be accepted.
How about Admin intervention. (Like a system event)
Pay one player to Successfully run Cargo (Specially made Icons like Important POW or New technology like "ship designs" for the 4.84 beta 1) which )from one place to the another or pay the guy who successfully stops him. Put a time limit on the Cargo run. Make the price high enough so Trader can hire Escorts/Fighteres/Etc. etc.
The results couldalso determine which base se4lls that ship....

That sounds great! If the pirates suceed, they might even get that ship on their very own base. The faction that transported it in the first place, would still get it of course, since there are always copies of the blueprints... but that would be a real nice RP-background for the pirates... if they manage stealing it...
And yet, still, we get to that little problem with the lack of source code. Tortured's idea is a good one, true, bu it's been tried several times before (though not on Disco). Never worked.

I do really like the Idea of a system event run by the admins. They could get some real challenge going there. My imagination isn't really that great but even just the trade run from one base to another with a reward for whoever gets the item either, where it's supposed to be or pirates it from the player who's transporting it. Could work out for some really big impressive fleet battles.

Who says the admins have to run it?
If you like to make cargo runs, make a corporate transport, ID and affiliated, do some role play associated with that corporation and then you can create the missions and give them to others.
The KNF hire out to Kishiro and Samura transports (we play them as our traders actually.) and though you get no more profit than what you can sell on the cargo run you really are on a mission with a greater purpose than making money.
Who else is here not to make money? The reason I think admin intervention would be necessary is that they have the power to boost your bank balance.
All that needs to be done is for Igiss or another coder to enter an "RP Item" into the commodities list. Then the admins can grab a player (name from a hat style) and tell them, take this commodity from here to here and you will receive a very large reward. of course, this has to be pre-planned so that everyone knows and the interested parties within their RP characters can decide, right, I'll pirate that and collect the reward myself, or I'll agree a share of the reward as a protection fee and guard the transport.
The difference between what you do and what I'm proposing to be done, is that you do it privately unless a pirate wanders along and decides to pirate. My way, the reward and the risks are also much greater because everyone knows and can get a pop.
