There is no doubt in my mind that Freelancer is a hell of a game. But it got me thinking, what puts it out away from the rest like Call of Duty, Assassins Creed or even World of Warcraft? I can go as far to say that Freelancer (Discovery) is my most favourite game of all time, but what makes it so consistant of win?
It's a unique game, in a sense that no other space game has the same control scheme. All the older ones are designed to be used with a joystick, and using a keyboard is sufficently awkward. But Freelancer's control scheme is simple and effective, and so versatile that combat is always exciting and always growing and changing, new people bring new effective strategies to fight with.
the fact that Freelancer's ships and weapons are all unbalanced makes it exciting as well. It means not every ship you fly is going to be the same bread & butter.
Alot of people have said its unique and differant from other games. I must say this is very true. Space Sims are all very unique from each other I find, not like copy past fantasy MMO's (although there are some good ones)
It's that third dimension.
Even though, much like all the myriad land-based games, most systems are layed out flat, you can go UP, or DOWN.
Oh, and it's beautiful as hell, whether you're pew pewing in a mass engagement or smuggling 24k above the plane of the eliptical, looking through the cockpit glass or slowly roating in turret view, its always eye-candy. Old graphics and all.
I'd say it's the players too, but c'mon...most of these people are so cheap they bit-torrent stole thier ISO copies and wouldnt pay a plug nickel to keep playing if they had to...
