Me and A Couple of Developers and Modellers have been noticing a problem...
We export our ships, and then when in-game, they appear to be invisible :(
Only when you get really close they are visible again...
I thought it was maybe something to do with the LOD, But i tweaked it abit and nothing happened..
Well, I had a similar problem a few month ago on the Discovery server. I came across DarkStar in his Umbrage (a user-made ship), and the ship was invisible. Turns out I had my graphics settings turned down. Once I took all of the sliders all the way up, it was visible again.
So try messing around with your graphics settings? If that doesn't do the trick... well, try something else.

No its not that kind of problem... It has to do with ships that WE made and that WE are testing..
The exact problem has nothing to do with the graphics. I always have mine set at full. I'm not sure if me and Jaime are having the same problem, but the symptoms are similar. My ships are visable in the shipyard and while in flight, but during docking/launching cutscenes and while on the launchpad, the ship becomes invisible.
Yeah its not graphics related as my graphic settings are always maxed aswell..
I meant LOD as in the Line in Shiparch which specifies the distance of when the ship is visible, when thats not set right the ship becomes invisible, Although our LOD lines are set right :/ So im not sure what it might be... Like Ashes (Nighthawk) said its in the process..
Ideally the ship should have some additional, low LOD so that it doesn't disappear when you decrease the object detail setting.
However, even with that setting maxed, the ship can disappear when its centre gets off the screen. The fix isn't complicated, but I don't remember it right now.
So you can do two things. Either wait for another dev to post the answer here, or use the search button on Starport, or Freelancer Archived.

Completely different problem. That's to do with the ship radius and can be fixed by loading the model into FLModelTool and saving it again. This problem, the ships are invisible when they're in the centre of the screen, not when they're turning.

Can't remember if I tried that. I'm pretty sure I did. But I know for certain that when I made the Greyhound and Cutlass that I didn't have to change the LOD settings. Can't hurt to try it again I suppose.
