Hello everyone,

I just read one thread about solaris turrets for capital ships and wanted to propose idea, but that thread got locked so i hope you will not be too much angry on me and feel free to lock this one too if its also bad.

Ok the idea is to make solaris turrets automatically track and shoot down projectiles fired toward ship they are mounted on (or if you would like toward any friendly ship (in group for example)), or any in range (even yours?).

Player of ship with mounted Solaris would have no control over this turret ever, it would just take slot.

I know this would be extremely hard to implement reallisticaly, but i think it could be worked around in this manner:

Turret it self wouldnt have to track missiles,torpedoes,mines etc. Server would just let say every 30s made check if there are any projectiles near ship with solaris and let it destroy one at random, no hit roll or something like that so it would work more like an aura. Or even better to let server less overworked make projectile luncher event maker and let ship with solaris register as event listener upon meeting (14k and less).

Multiple solarises mounted could provide bonus lowering check counter efectively removing more projectiles from space around cap ship at same time, minimum would have to be set that would be reached by some 3 or 4 solaris turrets upon which no other solaris turret would reduce check time.

This would make this situation:
  • capital ships would have decent protection versus lone bombers, but would not become their nemesis
  • since it would be based on timed check, multiple bombers etc would be still fine to overwhelm capital ship
  • Solaris it self would not fire on ships/stations, captain of capital ship would have to utilize remaining turrets to attack something.
  • This would not make capital ships more effective versus fighters, all it would do is give capital ship captain more time to analyse situation, or do what ever he wants with that time.
And thats main reason why we have them right? We dont have battleships becose they can dodge everything that goes on them, we dont have them becose they can obliterate everything that moves since you cant shoot transports and everything smaller just runs away, battleships are made to take damage, they are suppose to draw attention while smaller, more agile and more vulnerable ships tear enemy apart.

You will probably wont like this allegation, but battleships are tanks as we know them from fantasy MMO games, they have big shield and sometimes they can do impressive damage but usually only to their counterparts.

The problem is not the torpedos etc. its the bombers themselves. this would COMPLETELY castrate their AA ability.

lovely idea - but i m afraid impossible to do.

automatic turrets cannot be done ( from what i know ) - and if they could be done ... balancing them would be really really hard. - you d need to walk the fine line between being just dangerous enough and deadly. - an ace pilot would feel betrayed by the poor aim of the auto turrets - while a novice pilot would miraculously be a threat to ships he d not be a threat to on his own account.

Im sorry you didnt read it whole, but it wouldnt fire at all;)
